Okay, here is my situation:

I have some movies that I bought and legitimately own. I am making a compilation of scenes from several discs. In some of the scenes, I have reauthored them, for other scenes I used them in their entirety. I have tried several ways to put them together into a single disc. Each time, I can get the scenes in the right order, with the right compression. Unfortunately, all of the scene markers are gone, meaning that I cannot jump to the breaks that were in the original disc.

SOMETIMES, I can get the scene markers to stay, but when I can, I cannot get the chapter breaks to work correctly. I can fast forward to the next chapter, but after a chapter is over, I cannot go back and rewind to watch it again. I CAN rewind/restart a scene if the scene has not yet reached its end marker.

An example: I have some discs with the best "Friends" episodes. Each episode has scene markers. If I put 4 good ones on a single disc, I can watch the first one, but once it has ended, I cannot restart the disc, or rewatch the first one, unless I completely stop the disc ("Disc stopped. Play resumes from this spot"") and then hit "Stop" again ("Disc stopped. Play resumes from beginning").

I also lose the scene markers that are in the original disc if I reauthor out the credits and opening (theme song). I have made my way around that, but I was wondering if there was a way to insert your oewn chapters and own scene markers before you "BACKUP!" your compilation...any pointers?

you knida threw me off with chapter break vs scene break....

Ive never put clips from different DVDs on a single disc, but I assume you would have to have all the clips in the same VIDEO_TS folder before you 'open files' with DVD Shrink. You know when you click open files, and it says it only has to preview them once, if the clips you wanted arent included in the preview, DVD shrink cant create an accurate .ifo file and therefore you'll have problems moving between clips.

When you click backup, DVD shrink looks at the files you specifiy to be included in the disc (everything in that folder) and then goes back and creates a new .ifo file. This .ifo file is what tells the DVD player whats on the disc, where scenes begin and end, etc.

I'm gonna try this when I get home today...

Chapter breaks are between episodes in a "real" DVD, whereas scene breaks are exactly that they sound like.

Think of this: In a real DVD that you rent, it often has previews. When yo uhave gotten through the previews, the dvd will not rewind BACK to the previews- just to the menu screen. Also, when you use the "play disc" option on a movie, you cannot rewind (either by skipping OR through the rewind-while-watching option) back to the menu screen- it is a different chapter, and not accessable once the "main" chapter has been accessed.

To be honest, I was not just doing this with episodic DVDs like friends and "24," but I was als compiling some "adult" films when I encountered this problem. :angelnot:

I did all of my reauthoring for each individual clip, then I backed up that clip. THEN I took all of my reauthored clips and did a single backup of all of my mini clips. After that, I burned that WHOLE backup into a single VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS file, and then burned THAT to a DVD.

I may play with it more tonight, but being wrong wastes a disc AND wastes a good amount of time, given how long the backup process takes. The burn is quick, but the backup takes some time...

Any good forums for info on this? The DVDShrink "Help" option does not do much. It looks straightforward, but when I follow the directions I get all of the chapter breakes, which are basically a one-way valve that moves forward only.

Ehh. I always hit Full Backup. DVD Shrink isnt good at the other stuff yet.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer. I worked for 321 Studios for a while (the company that used to make DVD X Copy, and then lost in court).

For full backup it works great, and even the cutting and reauthoring options are fine, but I am still having trouble adding or removing "markers" from the VIDEO_TS files.

Does anyone know how to add or remove these markers?

Almost forgot about the thread...

found this link in the ' how to-DVD backup'section on http://www.videohelp.com

http://www.dvd-guides.com/guid...nkmix

It uses version 3.1 but I had an older version (2.3). Just downloaded it, I'll try it out tomorrow. Let me know if this works cause my idea obviously doesnt.

Jesda, you worked for those guys? I almost bought a copy til I found out the core components of the program could DL'ed for free. They closed after the ruling about DeCSS??
