I've heard the eco-friendly shtick myself on more than one occasion. One of the guys on here (fiftytseng) works at a Nissan dealership in our city...he said that of all the cars they have, it's the black ones that need the most babying. They're very specific about taking extra special care of them. My black coupe looks like it's been through hell and back, and I've only had it for a year (May 6th is my anniversary!!!). Door dings, scratches, swirls...you name it, I've got it. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything in the warranty that will help up out with this. The best thing to do is to get that 3M film put on. Sadly, I didn't want to spend the extra $$$ on it when I got my coupe and now I'm paying the price for that...jaxcoupe wrote:my paint scratches really easily. I read on here a while back that Nissan made their paint more eco friendly and in turn less durable, I believe. IDK if that's entirely accurate as I haven't checked it out myself, but it would explain it!
so true, our paint sucks. we didn't got as lucky as the other newers nissan/infiniti that got anti-scratch paint. you scratch it and it releases microscopid beads of paint that fill the scratch . the ex35 has it.jaxcoupe wrote:my paint scratches really easily. mrodrig2 wrote:I have red and have a ridiculous number of rock chips. Only 9000 mi and I have 15-20 over the bumper, hood, pillars and mirrors. 2 door dings on the passenger side. 1 on the driver's side. A couple scratches from the zipper on my fleece sweater... come on Nissan, seriously? The paint problems drive me nuts.
If Nissan's paint is universally so crappy, is there any way to do a class action type of thing to get our paint jobs fixed under warranty?TrueFaith wrote:My drivers were constantly complaining about how thin and easy to chip the paint was on all the Nissans.
Black cars are a pain in the a** at work. Every car being prepared to go to a customer will get a thorough clean, but black and red cars always need extra babying. I hate dealing with them at work cause of the extra effort, but they do look amazing.ESP wrote:

So yeah...they just don't make 'em like they used to...
Ecological paint FTL!Aint a thing we can do about it other than re-spray em, or clear brasESP wrote:

Yes to all of the above. I went and picked up some Meguiars Scratch-X and tried it out, and it's not bad. It will pretty much get rid of small swirl marks, and for everything else it will make less noticeable. It even helps reduce the visibility of the horrbile water spots that I always get!bbbwilson wrote:so glad i'm not the only one. i've had mine for just over a year and it's driving me crazy with door dings and scratches in the black paint...even little dents here and there.
Also, has anyone noticed that leaves and bugs leave marks on the hood and roof that can't be buffed out? I had to park under a tree over the summer last year and I can't seem to get the bug and leaf stains off my hood. It's terrible!
Things like that stain your paint, your best bet is to take them off as soon as they appear, along with bird doodoo!bbbwilson wrote:so glad i'm not the only one. i've had mine for just over a year and it's driving me crazy with door dings and scratches in the black paint...even little dents here and there.

Eco-friendly yes, less durable no. All manufacturers are switching away from certain solvents (including xylene and toluene) which are more harmful to the environment (mostly due to governmental regulations). Replacing them may have a negative effect on the ease of processing of the paint, but will not impact the durability. All of the OEMs are doing this (the US government has set restrictions on amount of these solvents that can be contained in a coating if it is going to be sprayed in the US).jaxcoupe wrote:my paint scratches really easily. Got a link for this info? Not trying to call you out, but this seems highly unlikely. Based on the coating technology, it would be painfully difficult to pass testing with un-cured resin in the coating. Then, something would have to initiate cure in that resin. I just don't think this technology exists yet. Keep in mind, coating tech like this would then be available to all OEMs. Nissan doesn't make paint and never will. The main suppliers (BASF/DuPont/PPG) will gladly sell the coatings to any manufacturer as they are trying to make money like everyone else.mcheddadi wrote:

While the deteriorating roadways may be true, I've really got to disagree with you about paint having gotten better over the years. In all of my previous cars from the 80s, I treated them pretty rough. Then, when I started purchasing newer and newer cars, I would absolutely baby them. It's the newer paintjobs that would suffer the most from simple, everyday scratches like zippers and keys, etc. Hell, I just noticed yesterday that my back bumper is now covered in tiny scuffs caused by the light bumping of the lens hood on my camera from a shoot I had on Saturday afternoon. This has never happened in any other vehicle I've owned (even the black ones!)...AppleBonker wrote:I think the biggest problem is the additional traffic/deteriorating roadways. I personally don't think the paint has gotten any worse in the last few years/decades (if anything it has gotten better).
