Has anyone driven a Passat W8 or a Phaeton W8 or 12 cylinder? What are your impressions?

What is the verdict on these cars?

Will these be the G50's of the next generation?Seem affordable.

I don't know about modern V12, but I have driven V12 BMW 850Csi (powered by an M engine) back in Europe. I very much liked it. I would own one if I could afford it here(besides I haven't seen 850Csi in US yet). I have still gotten passed by some "stealthy" sports cars on autobahn regardless how fast I flew! Nowadays it is not practical to own such cars, unless u doing very well.

Are you sure it was an M version? BMW V12 from that era were single cam two valve not really suitable for high performace like the then contemporary 4 camshaft 4 valve per cylinder MB V12.

There are 850Csi in the US, just rare. Funny thing is the last time I talked to an owner of one in Portland, he couldn't help but comment how fast the G50 Q45 was.

The way I see it is this: Putting a powerful engine in a boring car doesn't stop it being boring, it just makes it faster.

The Passat is missing almost everything that makes the G50 such a great car. The Passat is ultra-bland looking (though not mind-numbingly ugly like it's little siblings the Jetta and Golf). The Passat does not have a world-class engine. The interior feels like a lux-package Camry. The chassis and suspension are most definitely NOT sporty. The W8's power doesn't justify itself--any half-decent carmaker could have gotten the W8's power from a V6 (like the VQ in the Maxima). The Passat is basically an overpriced Accord or Altima with a big engine that can't even make decent power. The only thing it has going for it is 4Motion AWD, and that's only if you like AWD.

The Phaeton is a different story. It has a higher-class interior, has the Audi A8's sexier profile (though VW did a good job of trying to make it as bland looking as the Passat). The W12 actually makes power befitting it's size and cylinder count. The Phaeton is a nice big car, with a roomy interior.

Only buy a W8 Passat if you are a VW tech, and even then you probably wouldn't want to. They are horrific to work on-when an O2 sensor needs replacing, the entire engine must come out IIRC. VW crammed an 8 cylinder engine in the space normally taken up by a turbo I4. When I worked in sales for a VW dealer the techs always hated to see them come in.

I think it's a sweet car. I was not aware that the W8 came with a manual transmission and AWD. I'd confirm that it has AWD and that the 4Motion badge just wasn't stuck on.

Every one has their so called "57 Chevy"

Even the Pontiac Aztec has a loyal following among its fans.

The Passat W8 has always intrigued me. And it just so happens that one of the analysts at my previous job had one. She never did let me drive it though, something about her husband...

Anyway, if I were to choose from the Volkswagen Group, my preference would have gone to the Audi S4.

And of course I'd prefer an Audi A8, S8 or RS6 to a VW Phaeton.

The Phaeton's interior is damn nice but its exterior just doesn't do it for me.

But when better Bentleys are built they're built by VW!

Imagine if Beemer V12 had 48 valves, that would be a monster power house!Look ant McLaren BMW V12 engine - simply AWESOME!850Csi had enough power to please most BMW lovers. I don;t know if Q45 can compete with 850Csi with 6 speed (auto is not an option) .Regarding M powered engine, the M techology was usedto build valve train (larger intake/exhaust valves) M type cam shafts! So, in a sence it was an M8 I wish I could own one of those timeless beauties!
