I know this sound like the hypothesis from an 8th grade science project, but im losing my mind over trying to decide what size tire i am going to run on the rear of my mr2 with 17x7's all the way around.

I hear a lot of people saying that 235/40's work well on 17x7's. But others say that this will have a distorted contact path. I also know that by going up in sidewall, you can go out in width a little bit. So would running a 45 series tire (235/45) work well, and eliminate this distortion if used on a 17x7? What do you guys think? Also does anyone have any close-up pictures of the sidewall of a 235 on a 17x7?

Thanks a lot!

.............step 1- search.step 2- search again, we just discussed 17x7" tire options.

step 3- read this:

summary of the discussion: nothing over a 225-45-17 is really a "good fit", an optimal tire would be a 215-45/40 or such tire. anything wider will be sequeezed severely on the wheel, esspecially a 235-40.

just because you can physically mount it on the rim, doesnt mean you should.

Step 1- I did search.

Step 2- I searched a little more, and more, on about 3 different forums.

Step 3- Thank you for NOT answering my question, as no one else has yet in my searches. I am not asking about a 235 with a 40 series on a 17x7. I am asking about a 45 series sidewall. This has not been discussed, it has been either 225/45 or 235/40's, NOT 235/45's. It is a known fact that a tire with more sidewall can be run in a larger width, which is why i ask if a 235/45 would eliminate the contact distortion.

And yes i know you can physically mount a big tire on a small rim. I know i could mount a 255 if i wanted to. But im just trying to find out how far you can go with not only width, but in sidewall in consideration as well.

see, but I did answer your question, and it was answered in a thread called "17" wheel and tire help please" that you can probably locate since its recently active. and we DID discuss a 235-45-17, and my statement DID tell you a 235 is too wide, even in a 45 series.

in fact, I know i've discussed reccomended sizing on a 7" wheel, up to and including 245-45-17, 235-45 and others.

thanks for your time.-chet

edit: also, search does not appear to work correctly since the server change. :/ sorry I was so critical, but I did cover that topic in the thread mentioned.

Thanks! I decided just not to push it. A kumho Mx will be mighty sticky anyway. I talked to tirerack ppl as well, and did a little more research. Im over it though, its all good. Just cant wait to get the new 225/45's!! They will be gods among mortals!!

(Im just sick of the 205/40's i currently have, and am exited about getting new tires) :)

Later!
