I managed to get out of a speeding ticket yesterday. I was doing 60 in a 35 and got clocked at 56. The traffic conditions were light, and the road conditions were great. I came around the corner and saw the motorcycle cop. He saw me and then looked down at his radar gun. I knew I was going to get pulled over at that point.
I turned on my signal and started slowing down. He came up behind me and just turned on the lights, didn't even bother with the siren. I pulled over, killed the engine, and put my hands on the steering wheel to wait for him.
He came up alongside and asked me if I knew why I was being pulled over. I told him that I was going faster than the posted speed limit. He then asked if the car was mine, and I responded that it was, and then proceeded to get my license, registration and insurance for him. I explained that my insurance card was expired, but that the policy is still good.
At that point, he told me that I seemed like a pretty upstanding guy, and because I started to pull over before he was going to only write me up a warning for the insurance card being expired. Although he did check to make sure that I had a front license plate, he didn't say anything about the 3 inch exhaust.
All things considered, I think that I got off because I respected his authority, and made things easy on him. Although it wasn't said, I think we both knew that even though I was going 25 over the limit, I was doing it safely. It's nice to be a little bit older. I don't think I would have gotten out of the ticket if I had been 18.
