I did some calculations today, and have come to the grave realization, that on top of tuition, rent, food, and beer money, I will probably not be able to keep up with car insurance. This being said, I will have to probably trade my wonderful coupe in for a Toyota truck or dare I say... the car that shall not be named. I think I'm going to setup a paypal donation account for the Keep G Drivers Alive fund.

Glad you actually realized you not going to be able to keep up with everything andd the first thing was the car on the list. There are so many other things you can do also beside switching the car. To be honest with you If I were you I would buy a house first before buying a relativly expensive car.

Sell the car and get Civic or something what can take you from A-B safely every day. Once your financial life is a little ahead than treat yourself with something nicer.

My 2 cents into your new fund as a first donation.

No way I could have made it through college with a car payment, much less one the size of a G payment. Hell, still have 3 years to pay on my education that ended over 7 years ago.

You should be happy that you could afford the G while you did, and that you have a G through college...I drove a Focus... :-\

At least you are realizing your money situation, unlike so many Americans in debt. Take control now, and soon enough, you'll be back in a G, or something even better...

I payed the car in full when I bought it, so it's really not that bad. I'm debating whether I can afford the 3500 a year for insurance which is the problem. My mom keeps reassuring me that I can use parts of my student loans to help with that, which doesn't seem that bad because I'm going to med school and by the time it comes to paying everything back, I'll be pretty well off.

WHOA. 3500? A YEAR? For ONE car?

Damn, I will NOT complain about my "2300/year for 3 cars" car insurance again!

Maybe you should shop around for a better rate first. I'm sure your age is a huge factor (under 25 years of age and they lump you in the same "risk" category as people with Narcolepsy and Helen Keller).

But I'm SURE you can beat 3500/year! Even if only a little...

Can't you get under your parents insurance or something? I stayed under that until I got out of college.

Definately has to be Age combined with the '06 Luxury sports coupe.

Hell, I'm at $1800/yr for 3 cars. All full coverage.

As a parent I would never allow that with this type of car (in fact probably no car) since it drastically could affect my own rate if something occurs (been there, done that). Even if the rates are not affected it also opens the door up for other legal issues.

What I would recommend is to either sell the car or downsize the coverage based on current income levels and so on. I would also not mention using part of a student loan to cover car insurance cost unless that is a listed permissible expense.

The house idea actually is not a bad suggestion depending on the circumstance and if the parents want to help with that so be it. I know of one Korean guy at work that had two of his kids going to college in Seattle. He bought a house for the kids so they could hang together with other Koreans and also so he would not have to pay for rent or boarding expences. While the house was initially more expensive it sold after they were out of school and essentially paid for the schooling. Everyone was giving him a bad time while he was doing this but no one was laughing at him afterwards. If you can afford a house, probably a good direction and the current housing market would probably make it even more so.

Well if I was a parent I wouldn't let such my kid at such a young age have such a car, but that's a whole other topic and my baised ol' timey thinking.

When I was under my parents insurance the car was still under their name, swtiched after college. Never heard of any issues or possible ones. May laws have changed since then.

The student loans could have their set of rules on how they are used. Mine at the time didn't have any rules. Used my loans for bills/rent/etc along with tution/books. Never had an issue.

If you have a kid under your insurance and there is a serious wreck it can come back to haunt you. I know this by experience. In my case it has not affected me with my current carrier but I have had my options compromised with trying to obtain cheaper rates through other carriers because of it. So in effect it is costing me in the pocket book.

Also there were some liability issues associated with it. The insurance company was able to dodge the bullet which helped me out but otherwise I would have been toast there as well.

While you may use your loans basically for what you stated I have a feeling that if they were aware of you possibly using them for paying car insurance rates, especially outside some 'normal' parameters I think you may well not be following the requirements of the loans.

Otherwise at the present time I would have my wife get low interest education loans and pay all the bills at reduced interest rates. I also believe that in the case of IRS reporting this could become an issue as well.

And believe me I would not allow a kid to access anything more than a bicycle if I could. If it had a back seat I would get rid of it and install the most uncomfortable single small bucket I could find to keep his 'mileage' down. If a girl would ride a bus.

Yeah, I'm 18 and living on my own, so my mother's allowance of the car wasn't really a factor. I did shop around, and since my mom is a teacher I got some government discount, which drastically brought the price down as impossible as that sounds. It was mostly my fault for my youthful and reckless driving years back.

So pretty much the plan is at least keep the car for the first year, for I have already payed for a full year of insurance which won't end until July, so this time next year I'll have to decide whether or not to part from my white stallion.

This man is completely right, ive learned this lesson the hard way. I bought my G when I was 19years old, traded in my new altima after 11 months of having it and ate 6k in equity. That being said, my payments were $600 a month, now i practically want to get rid of the car and can't wait because zozoka is right, 1st get your life straight and than get something nice. My lease is 9 months and counting, can't wait. Want to move out from mommy and daddies place haha

I feel your pain Joseph, I just bought a house in Feb, and I feel the $$$'s are getting tighter. I've had the G almost 2 years, but with two cars, mortgage, insurance, bills, food, power, water, parking, SHAT!!! I'm broke Zozo is right - but always look for new ways of making money, it's what keeps me in the seat of my G.

Based on your age, your credit, your location, your car's value, your marital status, etc....there's a lot that goes into your rating. Also depends on your deductible and your liability limits.

I've never had any points, single, over 30 all 3 cars and house insurances with same company.

And an '03 and 2 '93s are gonna be way lower than a '08 or '09.My '07 Versa and my '03 G35 were the same amount. Newer cars are just way more.

And NC vs CA has to be a big difference.

This is why his rate is high...If you paid for your car outright, you could go with liability only...but if you cause an accident, you're screwed. But $300 a month for insurance is a tough bullet to bite.

Actually for an 18 year old driving a 'G' I think it is a fairly good rate based on what I see here with an example just 2 years older with what sounds like a similar background driving an old Swedish car.

Honestly this is my 4th car, every car I've owned I've paid for in full, but all the others were beaters for lack of better terms. So that being said if something does happen I want it to be covered, so I'll pay for the extra coverage. Like earlier in my NICO life time when a rat chewed through my brake actuator wires, insurance covered the 2k I had to drop to get it fixed.

And Willey, yeah I completely understand. After medschool I'll probably be set with a decent house with a nice garage for my dream poopra.
