you need a complete rebuild kit, the tools to do it, some type of know how(fsmbook), and a clean area to lay the parts out. this is provided that all your original parts are still usable. yes, you could easily rebuild your engine in your garage. the forum will try to help you if you have problems. they allways do..

I just rebuilt my KA, I can give you some tips. First you are gonna need some basic tools, in addition to an engine stand and a hoist. As far as tools goes, make sure you have a good set of metric sockets if that wasnt too obvious. Make sure you have a set of extensions for them, and flex heads are the best. Also make sure you have a good torque wrench and some some sockets to fit it up to 22mm (for the crank pulley, I think its 22mm). A good breaker bar and a pry-bar set wouldnt help. As far as parts go, you are going to want to change the main bearings and rod bearings, piston rings are a must.. all gaskets, especially the headgasket. (intake manifold gasket, oil pan gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, valve gasket, etc..) and front/rear seals. Dont forget the timing parts, both new chains, tensioners etc.. If you are going to do any mods especially that involve headwork go ahead and have them done so you dont have to tear that engine down twice. I didnt have time when I did mine so I didnt get the block bored and Im gonna have to do it again later. Make sure you get an fsm, if you cant find one send me a pm. Last make sure you get baggies and label them for your screws and especially label the pistons/rods you take out because they are internally balanced and will need to be put back in their respective cylinders. I hope this helped you somewhat. Goodluck.

I forgot to add a few special tools youll want to include would be a TDC tool, a c-clip spreader for the shifter and a clutch alignment tool. You should replace your clutch while youre in there, and I also forgot to add above that you mind's well get rid of the EGR and Intake recirc.. if you ever plan on turbo'ing the car it has to go, why not do it when the engine is out of the car (plus it frees up a little gain, remove the clutch fan as well).

I was wondering just how much hassle this would be also. That's pretty much what I thought I was looking at. I just finished the emissions removal and now I will be rebuilding the bottom end soon on my coupe. I'm pretty sure I have a rod knocking. Thanks for the info. I have an engine stand and a hoist that I can borrow. I can't wait to get started.

Thats a matter of retiming.. sure its a little more work.. but atleast you dont have to go the junkyard and salvage screws lol.
