Oh, you do? Tell me what the civil war was like.

Actually, I occasionally buy CD compilations or CDs that come with bonus DVDs.

Sony Corp. of America announced this month that the 50-year-old plant will cease operations between March 18 and 31. A downturn in CD sales began in the age of file-sharing and CD burning and accelerated with the advent of digital downloads.

Digital sales - full-album downloads and their single-song equivalents (the industry considers 10 song downloads equal to an album) - accounted for 47 percent of albums purchased in the United States last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks the recorded-music industry.

Here's a story on Tower Records:

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Ne ... Close.aspx

Solomon, however, contended the online businesses weren't a major threat, and the company went further into debt to add new retail outlets. It added $80 million in debt between 1998 and 2000 to open a dozen more stores.

Online companies "have been giving stuff away to create sales," Solomon told The Bee in 2000. The Internet "is certainly never going to take the place of stores."
How naive and stubborn.

I bought my last CD back in 2005 (I think). Later in 2007, I had all of them transferred onto the iPod I bought in 2005. It's kinda sad ... I used to work for Spec's Music in '86, which was their transition time from vinyl to CDs, keeping the cassette sections for those who still had car-audio tape players. It's a shame, because my whole life I've enjoyed going into the music store and looking through the all the sections ... it was the atmosphere alone! Now, I do all of my music selection online. How boring; in fact I think I gained a few pounds since 2005. :chuckle:

Haha, comical! Funny, my son and I set up my old turntable yesterday in the garage next to my old JVC rack system that I can't seem to get rid of. :gapteeth: He selected from one of my ancient VINYLS and proceded to observe, "So the wider lines on the record are how you find the next track, right Dad?" :chuckle: ... He's 15.

I get my music online simply because most of what i listen too isnt sold in most music stores. But here recently ive gotten tired of organizing massive playlists and just use slacker. Slacker.com is freegin awesome!

I however do still buy vinyls. Most really old punk ep,lp were only put out on vinyls. AFIs 7inch with demonimania is my fav. But Bad Brains "Banded in DC" is a close second.

I spend a couple hundred a year on vinyl. I usually go to the record shops with the intention of buying nothing and enjoying the album covers and whatever's playing in the background, but I end up spending a lot.

I never enjoyed downloading music. Something about having a physical copy of the album makes me enjoy it a little more :gotme

Used to buy blank CDs like MoD, to burn my music to.
Now I'm even too lazy for that.

When I buy a better headunit I'm making sure I can play music off of the USB drive.

I actually sent in my collection to an online store-front out of North Carolina. They were actually a stand-alone music store dealing with used items as well (I cannot recall the name). They offered cool incentives to trade used CDs for electronics. Out of the CDs I sent them, what they chose to keep was enough to get a 1st Gen iPod Touch-32G, and another 2G iPod Nano. On top of that, they would burn all of the CDs to the new Touch. Really cool deal at the time! ..... Yeah, then a year later the iPod got stolen. :tisk: Thank God for multiple back ups!

I haven't bought a CD in years, I use iTunes or now Amazon MP3 for pretty much everything. If I absolutely can't find what i'm looking for at one of the two, then i'll go out and buy the CD. I have 10,000+ songs in my library, which I large amount of them were ripped from CD's originally though.

I would agree as I loved having a CD collection. But, there's nothing like the feeling of carrying your entire music collection in your pocket and all ripe for the picking when you feel like it, whether at work or traveling. Easier access anywhere/anytime, faster transitions, etc. - That's what sold me.

320kbps is still fairly compressed. You can't call yourself an audio snob if all you listen to are MP3's. Some of my music ripped from CD's is ripped at over 1100kbps. Some of my own music is even at over 2800kbps. That's really excessive though... it's hard to tell past 480kbps.

:gapteeth:

As for the original point of this thread, yes, I still buy CD's. I like actually holding it in my hands... it's better than just downloading it.

Until someone invents a fool-proof DRM solution I'll pass.

If there was a Steam for music, I'd consider it. But last time I checked, there wasn't.

Thats the same attitude the owner of blockbuster had when netflix was looking to partner up back in 02-03. Some people...

I rarely buy a cd. BUT I do go to a ton of concerts and that's where bands really make their money anyways. I can't steal music from is Jack Johnson. Giving away 100% of his concert profits to charitys makes him a bad a** for sure.

As mentioned before, I like to have tangible things for my multimedia entertainment however that pretty much only pertains to movies and games now and I almost exclusively download my music. The exception is when my favorite band, Clutch, comes out with a new album. I have 12 of their albums on physical CD's and I will continue to buy them on CD so that I can keep my collecion going.

I only recently got a media player (Xmas- I know, I'm near caveman status when it comes to tech stuff). I like having everything right there, and its allowed me to sample some albums that I might not normally buy which I now will- Wasn't sure about Daft Punk until listening to some downloads. I also like it for some of the one-hit wonders through music history. But I will definitely still buy CDs when I find the bands I like. Hell, until my car stereo ate my Foo Fighters CD, I would also listen to tapes on occasion.

I still buy CDs. Downloads are not of as good a quality plus tearing that security seal off the case is like popping a chick's bra off.
