i've managed to track down a ka24de for $400 with the 5 speed transmission and harness. it has 140k on it but guy selling it said it ran like a champ while it was in the car. the good part is that the engine is about a 10 minute drive from here. what do you guys think?

Don't rely on what people say.

Look for oil leaks around the engine block, oil pan, valve coverCheck the spark plugs and see if they are covered in black carbon build upOpen the distributor cap and look at the condition insideRemove the valve cover and look inside to get a sense of the engine's condition

These sorts of things will give you an idea of how well the owner took care of the engine. It will not guarantee that its in top shape but it helps.

There are other things to look for but you can make a checklist.

i say jump on it.

if youre getting everything you need to swap it into your car, it sounds like a deal.

then, you might have to worry about anything the guy might be lying about later on, but depending on the guy, he might be tellin' the truth.
