My cars a 98 and the only way I can downshift into 1st gear at say 10mph is if I double clutch. There are times also in real cold morning that when I first start up and try to shift to 2nd for the first time I get a grind unless I double clutch the first time. 10 seconds after double clutching to 2nd everything is good with second gear if I try getting back in it again. I heard at freshalloy.com this is normal, but is it realy? Do you guys all need to double clutch getting into 1st when rolling at 10+mph? Or are my syncros bad?

Hey man, first of all, I do not think you should ever even down shift into first. You shouldnt even need to downshift into first, it unneccesary. And double clutching is not important either, to down shift the best way, you should learn how to heel-toe. Double clutching is also uneccessary. And actually, I think that in the cold mornings, 2nd gear does grind. What I do is just shift into it slowly. But I always try to warm up my car first and leave it running for a bit, and when it is warm it doesnt grind at all. Try that. PEACE

huh?

What I do to get into first is disengage the clutch.. shift to N... gas to 2-3k rpm.. disengage the clutch.. shift to 1st.. that's double clutching right? Then what's heal to toe?

I use to double clutch when I drove fire trucks. Especially this 64 Ford cab-over. Talk about a pain in the a$$. But it was fast for a tanker.

Double clutch a 240SX? No, it's not necessary. There was also a large thread on this very subject a few weeks ago.

well 1st off 1st gear is not synchronized with the other 4 gears so you should eithe rbe going alot slower than that to put it in 1st or not do it unless of course u come to a complete stop. double clutching is fine but as bubba said its not needed.

Na... you shouldnt have to. I had a transmission on my old car that was like 180K miles old and there was no need to double clutch goin into any gear.

I have the same problem and double clutching when it is cold seems to fix it or make it a lot better. And it's not hurting anything. I think it helps when cold. My car is the exact same way as yours w/ 1st too.

Yeah mine is the same way when cold. I just go first to third for the first shift. Only have to do that in the winter though.

Why not? Say you are down to 5 mph? Are you saying we should start accelerating from 2nd? I do use first gear if I have to.

I'd venture to say that double clutching is unnecessary, but it doesn't hurt. As far as cold mornings I don't know, or the first thing. I would assume that you downshift to first rarely enough anyway for it to really be an issue. You should always let your car warmup if you can, but when you can't, do whatever you think necessary, it's your car.

Heel-toe downshifting is a technique used to put you in the gear you want to be in when you exit the next turn, before you enter the turn. It is done in the braking zone before the turn. Approaching a turn, you would use the ball of your right foot to depress the brake pedal. You depress the clutch with your left foot, downshift into the next lower gear, then while still holding the brake with the ball of your right foot, you use your heel to press the gas pedal and blip the throttle, and then release the clutch. If your pretty good at it, you'll feel little or no movement of the chassis when you reengage the clutch. You can also double-clutch in the process making it a heel-toe double-clutch downshift. Since you only have so much grip in a turn, if you shift in the middle of the turn, you might upset the balance enough to lose some traction. You have the least chance of losing control of the car in the braking zone and being in the right gear during the turn also helps you modulate the throttle better and make a smoother exit.

you can double clutch whenever you want to within realistic revs...ie if you're already at redline in 5th gear dont double clutch down to 4th. heel-toe is double clutching while breaking into corners and such. the first step to learn heel-toe is to learn proper double clutching techniques. you should never need to double clutch upshift in a 240, big rigs yes, because they are obviously different. double clutch downshifting is what you need to learn for heel-toe. also i have never read this is better for your transmission? all i know is its a completely smooth downshift with no clutch grab and when done properly and fast, its like having your own sequential transmission with a clutch of course. plus i also like the sound or matching revs properly, makes all the stupid ricers heads turn, like wtf he reving his engine for?

Is there really any harm in repeating a thread from A FEW WEEKS AGO. I'm sure that thread is hidden way back in the archives, anyway. I know we're all about "the search button" here, but cut some slack... someone might have something new to say.

i have the same problem going into 2nd gear while i just start driving the car, even when it's warmed up. But i don't double clutch to put it in, i just have to move the stick towards the right side in the neutral section and move it back left and down to 2nd.

And for the heal and toe, who here can heal and toe here? i tried, but i don't have enough room down there to heal and toe, and i do sit kinda back already, i aint' that tall either.

Double clutching is actualy really useful when your clutch gets on in age. If you really need to take off hard but the clutch slips, double up and it will grab. After all, all dbling does is build up hydrolic pressure.

Heel-toe downshifting is not double-clutching. They are two different things, but can be used with each other. I heel-toe on a regular basis but never double-clutch.

It is not necessarily better for your transmission. Only your syncros. But as I've always said, why have syncros if you are not going to use them? What are you saving them for? For the next owner?

And rev-match downshift is only as good as the rev-match downshift is performed. But rev-matching is not double-clutching. Like heel-toe, rev-matching can be done with a double-clutch shift. I can't think of any situation where you would rev-match without braking though, since on a race cource, you are generally either accelrating as fast as you can, turning as hard as you can and braking as hard as you can. There is some transition,, but you want to maximize the use of all available traction. That will give you the best lap times. So you will generally be downshifting only during your braking(heel-toe).

BTW, a lot of this was dicussed in a previous thread. Here it is:

I've never had any problems getting into gears with my 95 240 but reading all these posts makes me think I might run into some soon. Can some one explain to me esactly what double clutching is? (w/out laughing) I've never had to use it but have heard of it.

i just got a new clutch 10 days ago.. and when i shift into second now it grinds when its cold

its weird before the new clutch it never did that.. and i think my brand new clutch is slipping a little bit.. when im in 3rd or 4th and above 3k.. it sometimes slips.. i jus went above 3k 3-4 times yesterday because i didnt want to do it after a week or so.

i have to bring it back to the transmission shop, and ill tell them about it have em check it out..

c-kwik me and you always get in a little debate over this topic, even on the other threads lol :) i have a feeling me and you are doing the same thing (mostly) but somewhere our lines have gotten tangled and me and you both think each other is wrong

Daunt's chick: Of course there is no harm in bringing it up again, but the reason I brought up the old thread, which is accessible with the search button, is because it gave good detailed explanations of heel/toe and double-clutching. If you think I'm busting chops, then you need to take a chill pill. Regards

maybe when they were doing the replacement they wasn't careful and got some grease on the flywheel or clutch. my friend replaced his clutch and it was grabbing so great that everytime he change gear it shakes the car.
