Absolutely agree with niztec, definitely roll traditional oil for the first 1 or 2 oil changes, and then move to synthetic. Sounds scary, but a new engine is going to work out it's own internal weaknesses, and may end up with contaminants in the oil, so regular shorter intervals is preferred at first, and then you can relax a bit with the timing on future changes.
IMHO, 7,500 miles is fine on most broken-in engines, but 2,500-3,000 for the first couple is good protection. 3,500 miles from beginning to end is overkill, but if you have the $$ and enjoy that warm cozy feeling knowing you did all you could do on the maintenance end, absolutely can't hurt.
For you older engine folks, switching to synthetic late in the game could open up some issues you weren't prepared for. Synthetic oil is, by design, thinner, and is not recommended for switching on high mileage engines, despite the oil's inherent benefits. It's very possible for synthetic to slip past older worn out seals, and cause leaks where existing oils didn't.
