Whining sound started a few days ago in power steering pump area. Today I played doctor and pulled out my T-scope and tried to locate source of the noise. Found out it wasn't my P.S. unit but, in the area of my oil pump. Oil filter, oil pump shaft, and oil pump were the guilty parties. Any recommendations on what needs to come off to do this job. Input will be gladly appreciated!

You'll need to take of the bottom timing chain covers.

Sure it's not an idler pulley? Much more common of a problem vs. a failing oil pump...

Heath which idler pulley were you talking about? There should be two idler pulleys right? How do you test for idler pulley failure? I'm pretty sure its something internal. I touched every area of the motor with the T- scope and theirs no doubt that the problem is in the oil pump area.

First question is, "HAve you replaced your timing chain guides?"

If yes, how about the oil pump drive chain? Where were the pieces? Were they all recovered, or were some left in the sump?

There are three idler pulleys.

Broken chain guides allow the timing chain to flop and eat thru the side of oil pump shaft housing.......big nasty slot that will ultimately seize the oil pump.......not to mention all the metal eaten away.

First try replacing the oil filter (after ensurin gthere is sufficient oil in the sump to avoid 'sucking air' A starving oil pump will 'whine'.
