Someone once told me that the rods were forged but I now have doubts because my buddies rod was twisted when we pulled it out of the hole in the side of the block

The crank is forged. Also proper grammar does a lot for readability.

Yeah crank is good for a lot of power. Pistons(rings) are the weakest link with rods somewhat close second. If you're doing aftermarket pistons then you might as well do rods too. Atleast that's what I'd do.

Pistons, not the rings. That is true of ANY engine that sees detonation. Forged pistons just have larger ringlands. It is ALL about tuning.

I dunno about you guys, but I've been ka-t for about five years now, and for three of those years I ran stock rods, and a good 17 psi, and 20 on race gas. So I can vouch for the stock rods; and I have seen many other ka-t guys run good 400 rwhp pulls on stock rods, but I mean if you are rebuilding the motor you might as well.

You have to understand, back then the ka had barely any aftermarket support, so it was pretty difficult to find rods at a decent price, but don't take my word on it.
