Do I really need to keep it under 60 for the first 1000 miles?

Bought a new Altima Coupe 2.5S, automatic. The salesman that sold me the car told me the following:

Until the car reaches 1,000 miles, do not take the car over 65, and do not keep it at a constant speed for very long (meaning, vary speed from 45 to 65 while on the highway) and do not use cruise control.

Has anyone heard of this before? I am taking a road trip on Thursday from D.C. to northern Ohio and wanted to take my new ride to break it in, but I'm concerned about this little piece of advice that the dealer gave me.

Thanks!

No don't worry about it, avoid the cruise control though. My salesman said thats what alot of dealers suggest, but the engines are broken in at the plant. Even with my 2007 Sentra I was told to vary my speed and don't accelerate to fast, but no top speed limit.

Have fun on the road trip.

So, I should take the new car, eh?

That's what I wanted to hear.

Anyone else have an insight about this?

I have a big issue with one of the break-in requirements on the CVT vehicles. They state that you need to vary the RPMs but CVTs always keep the RPMs relatively constant. You can accomplish this driving in manual mode but I would have bought a MT if I wanted to be in manual mode all the time.

So what do you guys think? Should I take it on this 400 mile trip? It's currently at 300 miles...

Don't worry about it. Just drive normally.

The breaking in of the engine is overrated nowadays. Enjoy your road trip.

i babied my 2.5 coupe for the first 1000 miles. I didnt beat on it or rev it too high. There were a few times i went over 60. I suggest keeping your rpms down for the first 1000 miles.

I bought my 500r Ninja last april. That was a pain. The first 800miles i was told to keep the rpms at 4k. 4k=50mpm, hell when other cars were passing you.

Then Keep it under 6k for 1200 miles. I wanted to fly rite away, but it was my first bike so it kept me safer i think.

Funny, when I bought mine they didnt tell me anything about "proper break-in" Of course I know the standard routine, but it would've been nice to have a reminder haha. I think the main thing is just dont let it sit at 1RPM for too long, even with the cvt that is possible, just vary up your throttle input up to one half to make it shift around a bit every now and again. (I'm up to about 800 miles now, tires need balanced though ) Oh well. Take the car and enjoy the trip! I'm going on a nice 12 hour drive on monday.. No way im taking my new alti haha I dont want to put that many miles on it already! lol. Ill "steal" a car from work :p

Why do you need your tires balanced at 800 miles.

Throw the eibach on and then get your tires balanced and aligned.

heres my 2 cents, beacuse modern engines are polished to a miror finish from the factory traditional break in methods do not aply and what I mean by this is that you should pu a decently heavy load on the engine for the first 200 mile or so in order for the piston rings to properly adjust to the very minute imperfections of the cylinder wall. In other words beat the s@%t out of it I did and when I took mine to the dealer for a defective throttle chamber they could not believe that my pistons looked brand new after 9000 miles.

That's what I did.

My favorite trick (of course I have the 3.5 so dont expect the same results) is to downshift in manual CVT mode one or two gears (depending on your speed) and then throwing my ride back into CVT auto and flooring it. Quite a kickback you get.
