Do I need an HID conversion kit 2007 Maxima

Hey,
I have a 2007 Maxima SL with factory OEM HID's. A technician I talked to told me that I need a new conversion kit if I want to upgrade my HID's to 8000k, otherwise it won't work properly. He told me that I need to replace the stock ballasts with new ones for the upgrade. Is this true? I just want a couple more opinions before I go and spend my money. Also what else do I need to know in terms of High beam and low beam. Do I need to purchase a specific type of bulb for my High beams to work?
