I am trying to make sure i understand how to pick wheels that fit after reading the stickies on offsets and whatnot.

Lets see if I have this correct:

If the rim you are looking to buy has a greater offset i.e. stock at 40mm vs. planned rim at 45mm then I would put in a spacer of 5mm?Lets say the rims offset is only 42mm would you still need a spacer or is that negligable?

And to add to it I have a couple other questions my head is brimming with.

How does a lowered suspension affect wheel choice, as well as tire width?

I have a 96 240sx 4 lug w/ tein s. tech springs.

You hav ethe right idea, but youre being a little too strict.

Nissan is very conservative. That doesnt mean you have to copy their sizing to achieve a working soultion. In fact you should be more aggressive. If you have the same size wheel as a stock 96 240 (15x6) you can use a lower offset without issue. Its only because a challenge when you have wider wheels. Thats where fitting strecthed tires becomes necessary.

You wouldnt want to buy wheels of that size anyway. Go for something wider. 8" wide with 30-35mm offset is pretty simple.

Is a 7" wide rim going to look awkward? Alot of the rims I am seeing that are 17's are 7" wide?

Ive found a couple i like. They are both 17 x 7 w/ 42 mm offsets so i imagine they will fit allright w/ some 215/40/17s

wheel offset and wheel width go together hand and hand... for example, +40 on a 7" is gonna look waaay different than a +40 on a 10" wheel (in regards to fitment).

well, unless you have adjustable rear upper control arms, as you lower your car, the rear camber goes in more, making the wheels "sink" in more (at least the top part of the wheel).

Also, oem wheels are sunk to begin with, lowering it and making the wheels and tires closer to the fenders just makes that (sunk wheels) more visible.
