im looking thru the service manual and this forum and cant figure our if my 2001 has direct fuel injection vs (the older style?) of injection happening before the intake valves?

can someone answer that and maybe give us a brief summary of pros/cons and what i might do in terms of maintenance in cleaning them with some of the spray products available?

You do not have DI.

Injector cleaners that are added to the fuel will have minimal effect. Fortunately, new or rebuilt injectors are not expensive:

No GDI, aka "DIG" (VStar650CL), in the 2001 QX4
If the injectors are electrically of mechanically faulty, purchasing rebuild kits or entirely new injectors may be your only option to fix the issue. If they are partially clogged due to dirty gas, which is inherently the nature of petroleum, a concentrated fuel system cleaner additive to your fuel tank might resolve that issue. I use Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus once a year as preventative maintenance to keep the injectors and intake valves clean and to reduce carbon deposits on the cylinder and piston heads.

Unless you're using it quite a bit more frequently, it's not going to have much effect (good product, just should be used more often).

A service like the BG direct rail flush would do the job, but it's more expensive than new injectors.

Absolutely true! Chevron and Texaco gasoline, with Techron, are typically my go-to gas stations for fill-ups but with the price of fuel nowadays I often look elsewhere for lower prices. I know I'll pay for it one way or another so I'm always looking for the sale prices on the Techron Concentrate since I'll need it more often for PM when I'm filling up more frequently at Rotten Robbie gas station.

All facts there amigo.

I don't put on enough miles anymore to matter - biggest concern these days is fuel going bad in the tank!

You do not have direct injection, that is similar to Diesel injection where it's injected directly into the combustion chamber, not the manifold. You do have port fuel injection where it's injected into the manifold, but thankfully not throttle body injection which was favored for a time by domestic manufacturers which was pretty much just a hose running to the throttle body.

I have had some luck with Chevron Techron fuel cleaner to clean injectors. Not cleaner with Techron, just plain Techron. It's twice as expensive. In my experience, it works sometimes. I've tried a bunch of others and had zero success with any of them. If you have, or think you have injector problems, I'd try 2 or 3 doses of Techron. I'm not saying it will do anything, but IMO it might, and none of the other cleaners will.

Including labor to change the injectors?

Not sure - I do all my own work. However, labor to swap 6 injectors shouldn't be cost-prohibitive.

As do I so I have a definite disconnect from what most people pay in shops. But a shop isn't going to give you the best price you can find, they will be charging list for it and they have a lot of overhead and some of it is justified in the "what if it goes bad and they have to replace it, and labor," on their dime. Which means as a SWAG, I'd guess a thou or more to replace all 6 injectors from a shop. Don't really know, just a SWAG.
