ok guys sorry to post this here, but i trust the ka-t people a lot more and 99% of the time you guys help more than flame, i know this should probably be in the n/a ka section, but nobody goes by there any more. so here it goes:

when my car is running, i always get this rich smell, like an old car with a bad carb kind of smell, and my fuel economy is really suck-ish, mind you i do have a walbro fuel pump(stock one went bad so i tought it would be nice to put it there since am planing on boost) and i also have an exhaust cam swap, and i don't think my modifications should affect my gas mileage that much.

so i'm leaning towards a bad fpr, but i'm not sure and i don't have access to a fuel pressure gauge with all the accessories required to check on these cars. so am wondering if there is any way of testing my fpr without a fuel pressure gauge and also i would like to hear your own opinions on this subject, its definitely running reach..., also could it be just the fact that am running a walbro?? i don't think that could be but it's worth asking about it...

thanks for the help, and sorry for maybe posting in the wrong place, i just need help!!

thanks in advance!!

You can get an inline gauge and adapter and install it pretty cheap.

But just a guess its probably not stuck. I was running walbro, no emission equip, and test pipe and was rich with lower mpg.

where can i get that inline gauge? just any parts store? i was thinking of just buying like a cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge and some adapters... but don't know if that would work..., i don't have any emissions either, does that to do a lot with it?? i do have a cat though, any way to fix this rich condition if its not the fpr?? other than boost it? lol..., am thinking the only way to fix it is an adjustable fpr.... but thats on the expensive side..., any other ideas anyone?? oh and also i could smell the richness before the new fuel pump, and i always have a hard start, which wasalso leaning me towards the fpr...

I got my gauge and adapter from summitracing.com, but most of our sponsor might carry one. Just search for fuel pressure gauge and 1/8 NPT inline adapter (the size of the fuel line, can't rememember, maybe 5/16?).

Just want to make sure the one you get is from 0-60 psi and not the ones that only read to 15 or 30psi.

No other way I know to change it unless putting back to stock or getting a FPR.

EDIT:Maybe the fuel line is 3/8, cause I believe this is the adapter I got:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-2975/

I had a similar problem on my old single-slammer ka 240, turned out to be the injector o-rings. I got terrible gas mileage, but it would run and cruise like normal. In the process of replacing the o-rings I found somebody had stripped one of the bolts holding the fuel rail in, thus not allowing the rail to press down on the gaskets and seal the injectors

Where is the fuel smell coming from though?

WD doesn't think the FPR is bad. But WD also has the setup that Biggie suggested. Inline adapter and a 0-75 mechanical fuel pressure gauge.

Pull the plugs, gap them to .038 after you clean them. Get a new O2 sensor, they are way to cheap not to replace every couple years. Also if it smells rich, I'd change your oil. Better safe then sorry for sure.

thanks WD, well the 02 sensor is about a year old, i replaced it when i did the first rebuild, u suggest getting a new one?? i know they r dirt cheap, but i thought they lasted a little linger, lol, and about the spark plugs i'm running the ngk platinum i (i think) and it says on the box that the gap is pre set and not to adjust it, but i'll check them regardless and see how they are, also i changed my oil on Friday last week and it didn't smell like there was any fuel in it...so i guess its not running that rich.

ooh and gingerbredman the smell is coming out of the tailpipe, smells like an old V8 with a bad/improperly tuned carb and they run rich.

thanks to everyone again!!!

I never trust pregapped plugs. As the saying goes, Trust but verify.

The O2 sensor is probably good. Try putting vanilla extract in the gas, it'll smell better
