do-hickey on rear bumper, what is it?

On the drivers side of the rear bumper there is a rubber "knob" or "button" type thing. Anyone know if it has a purpose or why it's there?

I'll post some as soon as the sun comes up. I just figured it was something that every j30 had on the left side of the rear bumper near the tail light.

must be something someone stuck there to make me ask questions. The rubber is so old I'm afraid to pull it out for fear it will break.

And if does break, who cares? You're pulling it to get rid of it. Worse case scenario, throw some duct tape over the hole until you can have it repaired properly.

I better leave it alone then. This car is my commuter so I don't have to rack up the miles and gas bill for my truck. I bought it for $900 several years ago for my daughter and when she moved out she left it in my driveway because it was knocking so bad. I got it all squared away and have been using it for my 60 mile round trip commute. So at 210000 I'm just trying to keep the mechanical stuff operating.
