My first DIY here, so go easy on me. I'm not a professional, but I've done plenty of installs so here's one I just did this morning...

Install Time: ~60 minsInstall Level: 2/10Tools Needed: Flat head screw driverlong Phillips Head screw driver(10mm socket with extender optional)Wire cutters4 wire connectors or caps, or electrical tape.Beverage: 1-2 Budweisers should do ya...

Product: PolkAudio Db1000 (they are now discontinued, and have been replaced by the Db1001. Both are 1" tweeters and other brands may work, but this brand needed no alteration or modification to the stock mount for install.http://www.crutchfield.com/S-o...B1000

Ok, here we go:There are 5 points that hold the door cover on. Each are screws/plastic locks that we will remove to access the stock tweeter. Use your flat head to remove the two plastic locks on the left.

Use the flat head again to remove the screw cover inside the door handle. Then remove the screw.

There are 2 more screws hiding behind the door grip:There is a notch at the base, use the flathead to pry off the trim.

Once off, the last 2 screws are exposed. The top is easy, but the bottom is in there pretty deep.

Now the inside door cover is free to be removed. You can now pop off the cover, start where I did, give it a good tug. Then move on to the right. Repeat till its loose. Then lift it off of the door frame.

There are now a few wires and such keeping the cover connected. No need to remove them unless you want to. Just gently rest the door down so there isn't too much stress on those wires.

Now you can see and remove the tweeter cover. Give it a tug to pop it off.

Once behind the panel you can see the stock tweeter, remove the two screws on the sides of the tweeter mount with your Phillips screwdriver.

Disconnect the tweeter from the car by lifting up that connector.

Now we want to save that mounting piece. its on there with some pretty good glue, so I used my vice. I'm sure Plyers will do just fine, but I like my vise. Once you have a good grip, remove the center screw.

Break out the new tweeters and included filter. The tweeters come with lots of mounting hardware, but you won't need any of it!

These fit right in there with no issue. Simply place the tweeters in the orignal's spot, and reinstall the stock mounting bracket. Don't reinstall that center screw.

Go back to the stock tweeter you removed, and cut the wires so we can use that connector.

Splice your wires together (White+, Black-) with the inline filter, plug the stock connector back in and test your system.

Mount your filter to the door any way you like, tape will do just fine if you're in a hurry. I simply taped mine behind the wires going to the mirror control.

Now work backwards and reinstall your door cover, move to the other side of the car, rinse wash repeat and DONE!

Crack a beer and enjoy this easy answer to the Bose lack of high frequency!

Very nice write up. This gives me a little more confidence to tackle the speaker upgrade I want to do on my own...I've done installs before but am a little hesitant to touch the G's interior. Looks just as easy. However can I switch the beer to a Killian's...is that cool?

So is the sound a lot better than stock? Are the highs a lot sharper/clearer? I'm half deaf (literally) and so I am not sure if I would notice the difference. See, with hearing loss, the Bose stereo system sounds pretty good to me. I just LOL'd when I heard people ranking on it, since I can't hear that it's bad...

Quoted for truth. I have a great imagination, and could apply some good stuff.

There is a VAST difference with an aftermarket Tweeter over the stock one. First thing you'd notice is where you perceive the sound. Before the install you can tell its coming from down low, as thats where the speaker is of course. But after the install, the sound is perceived to be surrounding you, as it should in such a tight space.

The highs are much crisper, yes. But if it ain't broke to you, don't fix it.

Personnally, I am very pleased with it. I was going to rip out all of the stock speakers, but now I may just leave them in a while longer, as I am satisfied with the install of the tweeters today, and the 2 10's in the trunk I installed last week.

Quick question.

Was the filter installed because it's a Bose system or would it be installed regardless?

I ask because this sounds interesting and also because my G is going on a severe Diet and every ounce counts...including the driver!!!

The filter is to protect the tweeter from low frequencies...it should be used regardless.

Filter is needed. It has very little weight, so I wouldn't worry. Without it your tweeters will be overpowering, as they will act like any other speaker.

I paid ~$60 for mine. The new version is the Db1001. They look to cost $100. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-o...B1001

But its worth it. I'm sure you can find something cheaper, but no promise that they will fit in the stock mount.

Most people would tell you to save your $ and get Kappa tweeters. They are nice, but much more costly and not that much better.

I enjoyed this very much. Swapping out the door speakers with this write up should be a breeze as well. Nicely done. Thanks.

I'm just glad to pull my own weight.

As for the front door speakers, it may be a bit more difficult. The speakers are mounted in a plastic mold that may not fit aftermarket speakers. I will be working on this very soon, possible this weekend. I don't think I have the speakers I want yet, but I will be exploring my mounting options. I'll be sure to continue the DIY for that as well. Check back sunday night...

Great write up. Wondering if you could help answer a similar speaker install question. I just purchased the Infinity Kappa 60.7cs, which is a component system, 6-1/2" woofer and 1" tweeter with a crossover. I already have these installed in the doors but am not sure which wires to use to power the crossover. This system has the power going to the crossover then out to both the woofer and tweeter. Any thoughts or suggestions?

gaskam, you don't need to power the crossovers. Just hook up the input wires into their respective places, hook up the tweeter and woofer wires to their respective places and you're good to go. The wires that are the inputs are the factory wires, you'll need to cut off the connector like Sneake did.

Question Sneake...Polk tweeters seem to tend to be overly bright and harsh. What's your take with these ones? I'm curious because they look to be the same ones in the 6501 component set and I'm looking at buying 2 pairs.

As I understand it, the reason for the crossover with the Infinity Kappa's is too make sure the bass is routed to the woofer and the highs to the tweeter. I also want to make sure that I don't get the same muddy sound from the Kappa's as from the Bose units. Since the Infinity Kappa's seem to be a popular upgrade, I'm hoping that someone else who has installed them can comment on how they wired their system. I can always try the direct hookup as you suggested and see how they sound.

smockers83, the Polk set are not over powering, UNLESS you fail to use the filter. I know a few people who did just that, then they claim that they are garbage. I feel they add very well to the Bose, are are just bright enough to make your stock speakers sound like aftermarkets (almost).

gaskam, your new speakers should be installed just as the stock were, assuming your not adding a new amp to the equation. BUT, do as I did with the filter, and install it in-line to the tweeters. Rule of thumb, if your tweeters come with filters, use them, they're there for a good reason. It not only blocks bass, but a whole array of sounds that you do NOT want played at really really high frequency. (Your ears--> <--Your tweeters)

It turns out that sunday moring I will be exploring the door speakers in detail. I promise some good pics with a DIY.

Sneake, thanks for the feedback on the crossover, now it makes sense. I stumbled on this product to properly space the door speakers. You may want to consider them if you haven't already, ZEnclosures on eBay. You can search "speaker spacers" on eBay Motors.
