As I was driving this past winter on the highway, a big chunk of ice flew off a truck and hit the hood of my car leaving a big paint chip that is the size of a quarter.

With all the snow and salt, the exposed metal began to rust a bit. Now that the weather is getting warmer, I want to patch it up. Before I put touch up paint and a clear coat on the affected area, I would like to remove the rust.

I was thinking of using very fine grit sandpaper to sand it off myself. Does anyone know how effective this will be or a "proper" technique to get this rust off? Are there options to removing this rust without damaging my paint?

Thanks!

There are rust removing solvents on the market. You would have to carefully apply it with a q-tip and then carefully prepare the surface before painting.

Is there a specific brand you would recommend? Or can I just pick up any rust remover from a local hardware store?

Thanks!

Also, being a big paint chip, should I use a primer on the bare metal before I put on the paint?

Not familiar with any specific brands. It's a chemical reaction so I'd guess any brand would do. Priming is always recommended. Hardware store people knowledgeable about their paint products would be your best resource. Having said that, I really think you should have a body shop do the repair. The whole hood should be repainted or it'll never look right. JMO!

My original thought was to have it done at the body shop but after being quoted for $800 I would rather sacrifice on some looks. Hopefully I do a good enough job that it's not that noticeable. Thanks for the tip though. Much appreciation.

If somebody would start making aftermarket parts for rogue like i saw on ebay for crv i would definetely replace my hood with Carbon Fiber hood. Found yesterday while washing a car that my hood got a damage too. I used to love CF. My A4 had a lot of CF parts.

The Honda guys get all the love... and the ricey parts to boot. Somehow a CF hood on a Rogue does not make sense. On a blinged out sport compact maybe, or a nice sports sedan like the A4 or BMW it makes sense. But on a CUV? I just don't see the logic.
