Foster kept pestering me (just kidding Fiz) about an oil restrictor for the turbo oil feed line for his KA-T. He is running a -4 AN feed line to his turbo from the high pressure port off his oil pressure sending unit. As many people are experiencing an issue with too much volume entering the turbo and getting past the turbo oil seals causing smoke in the exhaust and oil in the compressor housing discharge. I didnt really want to buy anything and figured I could make one pretty easy and not have it look ghetto fabbed.

Here is the result.

What I did was tap a -4 to 1/8 NPT 90* fitting on the AN side to 10-32 and install a set screw. Then the screw was drilled out to the required restrictor size. I called my turbo builder and he recomended .080" hole for a high pressure source. I think it turned out pretty nice and was super simple to do. This mod could be accomplished by just about anybody for pennies (unless you need to purchase a tap). *NOTE* Make sure you dont run the set screw in so far you block off the back side. Also make sure you blow the fitting out and that there are no shavings inside the fitting.

Hehehe...exactly the solution I've been using for the last few years...has worked great.

My setup is a -3 line feeding a standard T3/T04E...and I chose to use a 1/16" restrictor (0.0625").

(BTW, pics don't work...???)

when you say .080" for high pressure source are you talking about having a upgrade oil pump or are you just talking about the location you are taping from (oil pressure switch area)

Oil pressure switch area. Nothing to do with upgrading the pump.

hey ivan, do you think the restrictor that u fabbed up would really be necessary had the oil feed line been a -3AN? seems that ive heard mixed things about the need for one if the feed line is -3AN.

That exact one is for my JGS -3AN turbo feed line... I wasnt sure so I figured I'd lean on the safe side, turbos are freakin expensive and restrictors are NOT.

EDIT: you may have noticed that Ivan thinks I have a -4AN line, but I dont. ...Just -4AN fittings. That Ivan, he's like a child sometimes.

JGS must be doing something special if they fit a -3 line on a -4 hose end.

Either way, Fiz is happy and I have another satisfied customer.

And when you spend what Fiz has with me...... You get what you want

BTW Fiz... child SOMETIMES??? hahahaha.. ALWAYS...

Yeah I thought it was kinda weird too, but here ya go straight from the JGS guy himself. This is him posting at ka-t.org:
Our lines have -4 AN fittings but the lines are only 3/16 ID.
so wait, im gonna be using a -3AN line for my feed with -3AN fittings so would this still warrant the need for the restrictor? if that be the case, is -3AN too big?

I feel like it is for myself... Like I said, restrictors arent that expensive-- just get one and you dont have to worry about it.

Ivan cant name a price (or probably even really talk about selling them), he's not an advertiser here. If you want to have a chat with him off-board you should probably call him.

Just on the topic of oil feed restrictor sizing; the oil feed fitting atpturbo.com sell for the GT BB turbos have a restrictor size of 0.035".

So wouldn't 0.08" be a little on the too big side?

I think i remember reading that BB turbos need less oil pressure than regular journal bearing turbos. Can anyone confirm this?

That is correct, hence my question on restrictor size.

I've read 1/16" (0.0625") for standard bearing turbos, and 1/32" (0.03125") for BB.

That is the size i am inclined to go with, as i don't want to destroy the seals in my brand new GT3040R when i get it in.
