Hey i remember seeing a post a long time ago where someone tried to make up their own fog light ducts but i can't find it.. i've got an idea but wanted to see what their method was and if mine is better or i can improve on theirs.

i guess either way i can make this the thread with my build pics and how it goes. i'm considering modifying the foglight housings themselves, dremel the backs out and fibreglass the shape to get more air to the Godspeed smics

OK so if anyone attempts this WEAR GLOVES my hands are quite sore from all the tiny shards of fibreglass Dremel'd into my fingers during the cuts :(

Doh

I was thinking of doing something with the backers just as a mounting point for ducting from my powertrix ducts, but I'm interested to see where this goes...carry on, oh Now-Gloved One!

The powertrix look great but it's such a small air hole.. I was hoping to make something bigger but not look like total crap LoL
The good news is that this is my second set of foglight housings so if I mess up there's always the originals!

The fog lights, once removed, create holes in the front of the Z that can be used to channel more air to the side mounted intercoolers. The SMICs I just installed at almost double in size over the stock ones.
I'm hoping to cut the foglight housings and fibreglass a channel to force air to the smics

There are fancy aftermarket ones you can buy however they're expensive and I don't believe they channel as much air as they should

my wife went out so I cleaned the parts in the sink, lined an old cakepan with tinfoil and started cutting fibreglass pads in the sink. again, I have never used fibreglass or resin before, although something tells me there are less messy kinds I could have picked.. just to be on the safe side I only did one duct so far.

yea, so I don't know how to apply resin, but soaking the fibreglass and slopping it around seems wrong, maybe I should have just used the paintbrush I bought.

little heat gun for 15 mins, and wow the house stinks, wife will be home in an hour. I cleaned up as fast as I could, put the part I just made in the bbq outside to hide it, and mopped the floors with lots of mr.clean to hide the smell, opened all the windows and doors

depending on how this turns out, I may or may not do the other one, I guess I can see why nobody's used fibreglass, I think just cutting the backs out with a dremel was probably good enough. either way I will finish the one I started when it's hard, sand and paint it to see if there's any benefit over just a cut and paint job

Yeah fiberglassing is super easy, the way you are doing it is a bit over kill. You honestly could have used bondo as a filler/mold, then the resin over the top. Sand then primer/paint or wrap them to finish. I am getting mine tinted this weekend, if they don't turn out the way I want, I will be attempting this. Don't give up, curious to see the final product. The cloth you are using helps strengthen it. Not needed. Here is a video similar to how I do my custom molds. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EjSfBcakQBE

great tips, infact they made me abandon my idea LoL I tried different ways but I'm just not skilled enough to do what I wanted to, bodyshop guys could probably whip it out no problem. I elected to cut the backs out of my stock foglight housings, paint it red, clear coat, and call it a day.. and know what... it actually looks pretty good!

QUESTION though: how do I stop a rock from flying through and nailing my SMICs? a screen? if so, how do I attach it? to the fibreglass housing? staples? resin?

when it's dry i'll post pics of how it turned out with just a cut'n'paint

ok so maybe why nobody has bothered to do this is that it's a huge pain in the a** LOL and not worth the effort. however! i did cut'n'paint'n'protect the ones on my Z, just getting some kind of black mesh after work today to stop rocks from destroying the SMICs and i'll post pics, it actually looks pretty bad a** and there's a huge amount of air flow compared to the showroom CF ducts.
