Didn't see a DIY for this, so I decided to post one up myself. This is my first attempt at painting and it didn't turn out so bad. I had the help of one of my other friend. Feel free to sticky this :D

Supplies

4 stacks of free newspaper
Painters tape
8mm socket (grill removal)
10mm socket (grill removal)
400 grit sandpaper
1x Rustoleum Automotive primer, paint and clear coat.

Prep Work

Get about 3 or 4 newspapers to do this. Cover the windows, body and anything you wouldn't want to spray.

Image

Tape up the edges of the chrome trim so the stripping won't be discolored afterwards. Push the tape into the stripping, so you won't ruin everything later. Use a putty knife.

Painted the grill as well.

Covering is done

Sand every chrome piece down with 400 grit until it looks like brushed aluminum

Image

Apply 1st coat of primer to each side consistently or else it'll look off. I did 2 coats of primer.

Image

1st coat of black after 2nd coat of primer dryed up. I applied 2 coats of black paint.

Image

2nd coat of black on the rear spoiler

Image

When the 2nd coat of black paint dries up. Apply a coat of gloss, then apply another after the 1st coat dries.

Image

Grill done. Thats water by the way, not any residue from the paint lol.

Image

Right side done. When the 2nd gloss coat dries up, pull away newspaper and pull off tape slowly.

Image

Bad pictures, but I will upload some good ones tomorrow.

JDM angle yo.

has anyone had any instances where the chrome trim has rust where moisture has dried on it and left little brown rings. this is so annoying... i am afraid of long term damage.

my Audi had the huge chrome surrounding the grill. i didn't have any rust or any discoloration issues with it in 4 yrs. i've didn't see any issues with my parents' previous mercedes either.

I would think that it is all about prepping. If you sand every spot down and prime it then paint nothing would happen. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i do agree with you. but i did not paint anything. i still have the stock chrome trim and I see small rust rings in it upon close inspection. i am still under warranty. i wonder if that would be covered.

It's pretty easy man, it's just a very tedious and long job. You should get some friends to help you because you'll need to wrap the trim up. The paint is holding up pretty well for the past few days. Nothings chipping and it's really hot and sunny in Atlanta, so if it hasen't chipped off yet then it won't be for awhile.

Good work -

Also, I'd add that after you tape up, and after you sand, go over the trim (BEFORE painting) with a cloth moistened with brake cleaner (to cut any grease or oils from your fingers). I ALWAYS wear gloves when working on my car, for this very reason.

I like the look!

that looks really good, is there any special kind of paint you used, or just regular black spray paint like from home depot? im planning on doing the same thing with my black x. do you think i should match the color of the car by getting touchup paint from infiniti, or just get regular black?
also, about how long did it take to do?
sorry for all the questions!

sorry for the late response. Just go to Autozone and get any automotive primer, paint and clearcoat. I will usually get Rustoleum if they have it in stock. Well your car is black anyways, so it just depends on what shade of black you want. It took me 5 to 6 hours because it was raining that day. Just ask me if your still confused
