Hey all,

Looking to rip out the crummy Bose system from my 01 P-finder and I'm not too anxious to have to run new wire. Is there any way to use the existing wiring with aftermarket parts? I'm not going to have anything fancy in there, just some old speakers and a headunit that have done me well for a number of years. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

crutchfield may have an adapter to use the stock wire harness for the head deck. You could always go to best buy too. The only question is the bose amp...I would just have a shop do it...should cost less than $50 if you have all the parts.

It's definately going to cost more then $50 at a shop. LOL

If you're sure you're getting rid of the entire bose system then here's the process:

Get all the parts that you're putting in the car:

HUHU adaptor harness eliminating bose ampsHU bracketFront & Rear speakersSubAmps for both mains and sub(s)Power wire of sufficient gauge for your amps. Including fuse holder and fuse and ground of same size.

Now the procedure:

Start by locating the bose amp.

Unplug all the plugs from it. If you don't have a diagram for the colors (should be available at the12volt.com) you're going to need to clip off the heads of the plugs.

Assuming you don't have the wiring diagram. You need to use a multimeter to figure which are the power wires. When you find these put electrical tape over the end so they don't short anything. You're not going to be using them.

Then, take the other wires and strip about 1/2inch of the insulation back.

You'll need two people for this part. Take a 9volt battery and touch one wire to the positive and the corresponding color to the negative(blue and blue with white strip for example of the two wires). The second person should be in the car listening for a quick pop to come from one of the speakers. When they hear this they should tell you which one it is and you label that set of wires.

Repeat this until all speaker wires are labeled correctly.

Now, you have to run the power wire for the amp. It is going to go from the battery to the location you're putting the amp(s). You'll need to find a hole through the firewall. There is usually space in the gromet where the hood latch release cable goes through on the drivers side.

Put a fuse block on the positive wire within ~12" of the battery. Do not put the fuse in until you have everything hooked up or else you run the risk of popping the fuse from a short.

Then locate a place to put your ground wire within about 4ft of where your amps will be. This spot will need to be bare metal. So you'll have to sand off any paint and/or rust until it's shiny. If you can't find an existing bolt to use you can drill your own and use a ground lug.

Now for hookup of amps.

Place the amps where you want them. You're going to need to extend the wires that you labeled before to reach the amp. I recommend soldering the joint, but electrical tape alone will work fine.

When the wires are extended connect them to the corresponding output on the amp.

To to the speakers. You're going to have to figure out how to take the door panels off. I'm not familiar with the process for your vehicle. But basically you you have them off follow the instructions that came with the speakers.

Before changing out the speakers though i'd get the 9volt out again and test the wires. Make note of which wire is positive and which negative. It doesn't really matter which one you mark are positive as long as all speakers are wired the same way.

For the HU you'll need to figure out how to get the OEM HU out. Then it's just a matter of plugging the harness adaptor into the harness plug then the adaptor into your HU and mounting it.

When you get to this point post a message and we'll walk you through setting the gains on the amp properly.

Right on, this is exactly the advice I was looking for, thanks so much. A few questions though. The car is an 01 Pathfinder and I've always been under the impression that each speaker in the Bose system has its own amplifier. Is this the case with the 2001 Bose as well, or is there one amp that feeds all the speakers? Actually, that's the only question, I think I pretty much have everything else figured out pretty well. Thanks a million for the help.

I'm not sure on that one.

I thought after about ~97 the bose systems went to the single amp design, but i'm not certain. You may have better luck googling that one.

$50 is to install a new head deck only...

Listen to the bose hater, he'll steer you in the right direction!

Hehe. I'm not sure if that was sarcasm joe

Yeah it's cheap to install a HU, but all that does is adds features. It's obvious that the OP wants to get better sound quality then the bose system.

He already had the HU and speakers...I hate messing with installing a deck, just easier to have it done at a shop.

Are you going to NOPI in September?
