distributor wont go back in

just about finished with my head gasket replacement and head rebuild and i'm trying to get the distributor back in. it is about an inch off. i pushed and wiggled and it just won't get past the teeth, am i maybe doing something wrong or? err i'm soo close. please help.

fenagle? its all i got, if u got the time, take the valve cover off and a light and look down the front cover. You might be able to see the dist searching for the correct line up on the gear.~Sam
