while trying to find if anyone had the same problem as me i found this post on zilvia

"i put a 97 head onto my 92 block and did all the timing chain things. im sure i did the timing chain correctly, i triple checked everything. but when i try to put the distributor back in, it goes up to the ring and gets stuck. i tried taking off the ring and its still stuck. it only goes in when i turn the crankshaft with a socket wrench but when i turn it back counterclockwise it comes back out.
and once i put it in it gets stuck inside and its hard to turn it. i put wd40 all over it but it still doesnt help. anyone have any ideas? any help is appreciated. thanks"

I just put in a refurbished ka for a 1991 240sx and when i went to put my old distributor in it gets stuck in the same exact spot. Only way to get it in is to turn the crank as the guy said. Something must be wrong, it was never that tight to get in, it really wont budge.

Check how the upper timing cover is lined up with your head... if its a little high or low it will make it impossible to get the distributor in and out.. I had this problem and I use to have to hammer my dizzy in... it sucked.. Did you deck the head? If you did then tell the machine shop to deck the bottom of the upper timing cover..That can really be the only reason why it is such a tight fit. Try to make the height equal.

I'm having this same issue, except when I hammered my dizzy in it wasn't timed right :( I broke it during removal lol any chance I could shave some of the cover with an angle grinder and a straight edge? I dont have a machine shop local.

make sure the notches line up with the oil pump.... you gotta have it lined up (on the sohc theres a half moon shaped notch it locks into)

if its not turned right it wont go in all the way.... it took me a few tries to get it right.
