I posted back in March about a bad valve rattle, after checking compression I discovered that I had a bad head gasket because the compression was way low on the two back cylinders. Okay fast forward! I had the head redone installed the head gasket and put back on the Weber that I bought back in March. The truck starts but idles real low. I checked the timing and I can advance it to the factory spec 3 degrees but at this point I can't advance it any more its maxed out. Also I have the carb set to the way Redline says its needs to be with the idle screw turned in only a turn and a half and the mix screw between 1 and a half and two turns out. It just idles rough, when I give it throttle it smooths out. I'm guessing the timing needs to be advanced more. Any suggestions? Can someone walk me through the steps to reinstall the distributor so that I can advance it more? The truck is a 86 720 4x4 Z-24
8 plug. Thanks

So the distributor is maxed? Time to check the timing chain... see if you can't pull more that way!

Pezi's got it.....timing chains stretch....there are 3 peg holes in the cam sproket....you can advance a hole or retard a hole from stock.

I would check compression and vacuum when you're there. I just replaced my chain and cap and rotor and still have a rough idle. Plugs, fuel filter and a compression and vacuum check this weekend.

When I had the head reworked I put a new chain and sprocket and tensioner on the motor and lined everything up according to the book. I guess it could be off by a tooth but its really close. Is there not anyway to fine tune it? The distributor adj is maxxed out but its right on the factory spec. If I have to realign the chain how do I go about it?

As soon as I get some time I'll do a write up on how to do it. Its in my Haynes manual. The stock settings just aren't going to cut it with that aftermarket carb..... it like A LOT of timing.
