I pulled off my distributor cap today and I found the rotor to be on spark plug wire #2. Isn't it supposed to be on #1? Should I reposition it or just leave it since it runs fine?

Your FAQ said it should correspond to cylinder 1 but I bought my car used from a Nissan dealership so I would have thought they would check this kind of thing.

I think it's when the crank is at TDC that the rotor will point to spark #1.

So it really doesn't matter then? The position its in now is where it happened to be when the engine shut down? That means the next time it starts it wont fire until the rotor turns all the way around to hit the #1 position again?

Oh dear. It'll fire whatever cylinder it's distributing to.

Interestingly, 4-cylinder motors almost always stop at only two different places in the crank rotation. It has to do with how the crank throws are arranged.

With all courtesy, you should spend an hour or two on the How Stuff Works site, looking at engines. They have very detailed yet easy to follow explanations.
