i'm finishing up a built ka (de obd1) install into my 92 240 vert;i just wanted to clrify something about the installation of the distributor back into the motor;

On the distibutor, when you line up the circle dot with the other mark line on the distibutor, and you are pushing/inserting the distibutor into the motor, it hits the teeth inside and you are twisting as you slide it into place. this movement obviously shift your marks on the distibutor.my question is should i be compensating for this maybe 1/8 inch movement on the distibutor when it is twisted into place.also,how do i know exactly where to twist it to, because on the hole where the bolt goes through it is like an oval, not just a regular hole, so you have the ability to set the distibutor really anywhere bolted down.

can someone help me understand this before installation ruins my new motor.

When I installed my dizzy, like 1week ago into my built motor, I took into consideration that it moved while pushing it all the way in, so like you said I compensated for movement, and as I pushed in the dizzy I made sure the bolt holes stayed in the middle, which was where my last distributor bolts were. Once the distributor is installed if you move it counter or clockwise it will effect timing.

we'll just tryed that; compensdated for the movement,motor started, ran between 1500 and 2500 for the breakin;then, lots of bad noise...lots of smoke billowing from the manifiold.so, i know the timing is off somewhere.this motor came brand new built from hrt in nc. i guess the dustributior is off. i need to get a timing light and learn how to use it. LOL

smoke comin from the manifold is ok, its the gasket seating in, but yes you do have to fix the timing, another way to check if it moved and to compensate is to take off the dist cap, then you can check and align so that the rotor is pointing @ the #1 spark plug wire.

bad noise is probably cause you forgot to prime the motor before turning it on(prime, as in make the oil flow without lettin the engine run), and you prolly need another half quart of oil(do check the dipstick first)

i just finshed helping my friend install his rebuilt engine yesterday, thats why i remember most of it.

1. put the #1cyl at top dead center.2. place the rotor at the #1 position.3. slide the distributor into the engine.4. the rotor will move so pull it out move it that much past the #1 position.5. slide it back in and check the position and bolt it down.6. adjust the timing.

no, i cranked that motor with the fuel pump fuse out like 3 times for 20 seconds each time, then strted it. iguess my problem was in the fact that i wasn't sure if the dist ROTOR was pointing to number 1, i couldn't see the ROTOR. trial and error...not good on a 2200 built motor

OwWW! My head hurts. There is a full install feature in the articles section, you just have to search.
