I feel a little dumb asking this but how do I set the distributor to the correct position after I have taken it out? I know I put the engine at TDC but how am i supposed to tell where the distributor is pointing?

Thanks guys

take the cap off the ditributor and look at the rotor inside. Set the rotor to be at the #1 cylinder. You then have to put the distributor in a few degrees back, and twist as you slide it in. The gear at the end of the distributor should explain what i mean. If the rotor is still at the cyl. #1 point (refer to the cap), and the screws that held the distributor are close to the original point of contact, you should be OK. You might need a timing light or a shop to get the timing exact.

This is easier if the valve cover is still off. You might accidently change the TDC and not know it if you leave the cover on.
