Distributor hangs out?

On my ka24de, I can't get my distributor to engage all the way into the timing cover. It slides in, even engages the gear a bit, but still hang out about a half an inch or so. I tried to use a little oil, and some force but still it wont slide in all the way. I've done it lots of times before on my old engine but this one is refurbished. Am I just missing something? I can get a picture if you need it but its pretty self explanatory.

You need to twist as you push the distributor in.

still no luck with the twisting, should i try giving it a little more convincing with a rubber mallet? I remember putting it in before and it slid in really easy, I can't see anything physically blocking it either. Maybe its just a tighter fit then my last engine? and yea i know, loads of "that's what she saids" haha
