sorry, i am not too knowledgable on how the whole ignition sytem works, but i have been told i need to replace my distributor and i was hoping maybe you guys could confirm or disconfirm the news.

my car has been misfiring and jerking when in 5th gear around 2800-3800 RPMS. other wise runs great on the highway. occasional hesitancy when climbing hills in 3rd or 4th gear. lately it has been dying when i come to a stop. sometimes it will start right up, other times it takes up to 5-10 minutes before it will start. once it starts, if i rev it up real quick and let off the gas, it will die, if i hold it around 2000 rpms or more, it will stay running until i try to stop again.

is it the distributor, the coil, or parts of either, or neither? if so, can i replace it with anything aftermarket that will help my performance?

I would say the culprit is the fuel pump. Replace it and have the fuel filter cleansed.

I am not thinking fuel pump. Otherwise the car would die out when you try to maintain 2000 rpm. I think you have an air problem. It would help to know what kinda car you own though.

I'd start with MAF or MAF connection (if it's a Nissan)....
