Is the distance sensor needed? Helping a friend who got into an accident and the his front distance sensor is completely gone. Is this needed? Was wondering what it does? Like will any of his dash lights go off or something? Also if he were to do an IPL front bumper conversion where would the sensor go? This is a 2009 G37S coupe that he has.

Is it needed? No, not really. Was wondering what it does? It's an optional cruise control system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

Price wise, the sensor alone costs between $1600 and $2200.

Wow that was a fast reply lol. With the IPL front bumper conversion would this sensor fit on that bumper..? I mean there is no cut out so what would I do? I'd like to know what the people who have done the IPL conversion like if the distance sensor just sat on the bumper and worked properly?

I'm not even sure the IPL bumper will fit on a normal G...but if you get it on, I'm sure you would have to modify it to get the speed sensor to fit.

The grille of the IPL bumper covers it (there is no cutout) but it still works from what I've been told. If you don't reinstall the sensor then you simply won't have adaptive cruise control (standard CC will work).

If its done off radar then it will work through the bumper. That's where I mount my radar detector to keep it clean. Works just fine.

It's a laser-style system so it needs to see reflections from rear lights to work. Can't work through the bumper.

First time my wife used cruise control she came home saying the car needs to go into the shop because it was broken and kept slowing down. I had to show her how to adjust the distance control :chuckle:

that's awesome she probably had the default maximum distance!

as for the IPL bumper. there are some people who have the laser sensor and still operate the ipl or aero bumper. however, there is no guarantee it will work properly at 100% due to the mesh being in the way of the sensor. yes it will work from those who have it. but they also barely use it at the same time.

with the IPL bumper it's simply behind a grille instead of having a cutout like the others. From what I understand it should still work.
