Except that you're stuck there your entire life. There are some people who don't mind prison. They go in, find that they like having their life regimented, and like not having to worry about. They don't care about time, and will happily do nothing. That said, it's still prison.

That you might not find being restricted to a mental hospital for a longer duration than prison for a prison sentence to be as bad a thing does not mean it's pleasant. People who get off by reason of insanity do not get off scott free.

My wife just said your perception is bad if that's what you think it is like. Correct us if this is wrong but if the meds appear to be working and you agree to take them, and are acting normal, and show no signs of hurting yourself or others, they can't make you stay unless it is ordered by the court. And the only time you would be confined to a room is if you are a threat to yourself or to others. Most patients have roommates and they have activities for them to do.
I don't think I am as clueless about it as you all make me sound and I never said either of them were fun, it was just my opinion that I would rather be in a mental hospital than prison. Either way both are way better than the prison systems in other countires.

What if it's not the medicine alone that's making you better? What if it's the institutionalization? That's what I was getting at. Many people who get out of jail sentences get into hospitals for longer than the jail sentence. And I guess it just boils down to opinion: you don't think being confined to a mental institution sounds like a bad thing.

I guess I am pretty harsh though...If I was in charge I would hang the guy that marched his son outside naked and shot him in the face. If you kill someone, you die...sorry. Compared to that I think a mental institution, sounds like a sweet deal. I just hate the whole "insane" crap. If hes too crazy to realize he is being put to death, kill him. If he doesn't know but it gets him out of the gene pool, go for it.
Here's a fact...The average IQ in this country is dropping. Thats because more stupid people are having babies and more people that would not have lived a few hundred years ago do, and make more kids. We need to get a lot of these idiots out so society and we need to stop wasting money trying to keep then alive or confined. But yeah I know...All people are equal all people should have rights and blah blah blah.

I spent quite a bit of time working on the NGRI (not guilty by reason of insanity) unit at our local State Hospital... There's a lot of misperceptions above, but I'll leave it at this: They rarely get out, very few NGRI's are actually on psychotropic meds, and conditions are not pleasant.

Yes, I definitely recommend the film.

And I defer to Greg, with his first- or second-hand experience, whereas all I've got is radio interviews and law school discussions.

Well all I have to go by is my wife. She is an RN. She went to school at St Catherine University, which is one of the best nursing schools in the country. She has been to mental hospitals. I mean she has never worked at one so she doesn't have a ton of experience but she has been to them and seen how they operate.

I can't say I miss the job, but there was never a dull moment.

There was this one time that... Oh, sorry. Old guy stories are boring. ;)

Well, in the interest of disclosure, the actual personal sources that I was referring to were law professors that came from criminal defense - public and private. It's entirely possible that they had a spin, but generally it's easy enough to spot.

All good - No questioning of your sources here.

Although, it's highly unlikely any of them have ever seen the inside of a mental institution. Attorneys and professors tend to steer clear of "icky places". ;)
