I bought a 89 240 coupe a few weeks ago and looking to drop a rb20 in that bad boy. My questions why does everyone dis the rb20 and say "its a waste of time to buy that motor just get a sr20" i've heard and read this statement over and over been researching like crazy what is the issue with this motor i mean it is a rb after all. Not to mention for some crazy reason sr's are at some crazy premium right now ranging from 1500 to 2000 bucks rb20 900 to 1200 with the savings i can do all the maintenance on the rb timing belt, water pump etc and maybe even a lil upgrades. So somebody please give me some info on whats the issue with this motor before i hit check out and buy one.

In my honest opinion, im swapping an RB20 in because im so frickin sick of all the local ricers asking me if I have an SR.

Also check out the RB FAQ section, should be stickied. That should give you the pros and cons...

why do people diss it?

for all the hassle of owning a RB you get 0 advantage vs an SR.

parts are harder to find, harder to get and more expensive. information is also harder to find.

just because you are different doesnt mean you are better. never forget that.

I've said it once and i'll say it again.

I love my rb20 and ill never stick a 4 banger back in this car again.

but i may step over to a 2jz one day.

Of course if your aiming to be different you could always go find a Rolls royce Merlin motor and try to cram it in there.

+1 for Joe

If you wannabe different then get a 1J couple bucks more than a 20 then but power like a 25.

I would assume more parts available for the 1j also

Don't ever compare cost of the swap only by the cost of the engine. Yes the Rb20 might be cheaper, but to do the swap properly, it may cost as much as an SR swap or more. Also future modifications and performance upgrades for the Rb20 are harder to find and more expensive than for SR's.

This again, lol. I'm RB25 (and love it)if i could do it all over again i would with some jz motor, more so for the exhaust side is on passenger side. Anyways, not much gain over going with the proven SR. IF I was going rb it would atleast be a 25, "It's the red headed step child of the modern RB's"
