Has any one done a disk brake conversion on a 01 Altima? I would like to get rid of the drum brakes in the rear and wanted to see how much is involved. Do the calipers just bolt up to where the drum bolted up to the shock? Do you loose or gain spacing for the wheel?

I believe the SE had disc brakes. If you could find a wreaked SE you could just swap all the components over, backing plate, brake lines,calipers,rotors,e-brake cables and shackel, I might be missing a couple things but that is what I know for sure you will need to swap.

Bump! (Sorry)

I just started thinking about doing this too (2000 GXE).

From what I've been able to gather from other sites, here's what you need:

- disc and calipers (duh)- backing plate- knuckles: different than knuckles for drums, but mount to same points on strut- soft rear brake lines; hard lines with drums will not work (or so I hear)- parking brake cables (replaced from equilizer to brake)

What I'm not sure about is whether or not the master cylinder or brake booster would need to be replaced also. MY FSM indicates that the rear brake system pressure for the drums in lower than that for discs, so installation of the disc brakes would require an increase the system pressure. I'm not sure what determines that, if it's the MC or the booster. It would help to be able to compare part #s between GXE and SE for other components in the braking system to see what else needs to be replaced.

Nistech, do you know?

you only need the parts you listed. the master and booster are the same. I just did my swap 2 days ago. the difference is amazing.

Hey ultimatuc,

I had read your thread on the other board already.

I don't think the braking systems are apples and apples between 1st and 2nd gens, though.

Check this thread

About half way down, some guy Kenshi mentions and links to the FSM for the 2001 (which is essentially the same as 2000). Distinctly different pressures.
