That's wonderful that you know so much. Really. I love history and wouldn't mind taking extra classes in it.

Quote »second, while his economic policies worked, they are of questionable effectiveness, since he took office during a time of rampant inflation and unprecedented unemployment. Evidenced during the 1982 recession. The markets only had one way to go, UP.
Which created more jobs therefore it did work.

Quote »third, he didnt end the cold war, he just sped it up. The Soviet union was self destructing starting in the early 80s with its defeat in afghanistan. His ridiculous increases in military budgets helped to outspend the soviets and thereby bring about their end. they could no longer pay their people.

so much for appetizers.
I don't understand. You just explained how he ended the cold war and how his economic policies worked and then you said "So much for Appetizers".

Quote »I dont know, since I dont remember much about his presidency.
I don't understand again. Judging from your post above you are very informed about the presidency of Reagan and understand his accomplishments.

there really is no sense in arguing with you. i suspect the rest of the forum has come to the same conclusion. if you carefully re-read my point, i at no point say that his policies worked. i said they were questionable in terms of their effectiveness.

again. reagan helped speed up the conclusion to the cold war. He did not crush the soviets, rather he just helped put a dying government out of its misery. big difference. you dont really claim killing an 8-point buck if its already missing a leg, and half dead.

i hope that as you get older, you will make political decisions based on your own research and experience, not that of your parents who may or may not have actually based their opinions in fact but rather the effects of hours of talk radio.

Okay thanks Helio for the advise. Quite naturally, I believe the same as those who raised me.

As you get older Helio, maybe you too will realize that just because someone doesn't agree with you in politics it doesn't mean they aren't thinking for themselves.

I disagree with my Father in many political issues just FYI the War in Iraq being our largest disagreement.

Now please explain your comment about not knowing much about the Reagan Presidency?

I never really have heard opposing views of Reagan so it does interest me to hear the other side of the story.

ok. you are right. i dont know how i could have interpreted that statement as indicative of blind following.

my point about the reagan presidency is that it is one thing to vote for him in the moment, as a contemporary, it is another to vote for him after unbiased examination following years of political dissection of his policies and the effects of his administration. either way, i dont know if i would have voted for him. happy now?

I've decided that I'm officially making my status of America is #6 for what its worth. We really haven't become too dependent on the government yet. Yes, there are those in society that do depend on it for various reasons, but as a society as a whole, we aren't. There is still a lot of individualism and entrepreneurial spirit out there to not depend on the government. Many are critical of the government but are still complacent because they take a side and don't take into consideration the consequences. But we're transitioning towards apathy even though we had supposed record turn outs for the past election. These transitions take years to occur though.

Were there actually record turn outs? I know in Ohio it was less of a turnout than the 2004 election even with all the ACORN crap going on. I've heard similar from other states as well.

who started us down that path? seriously. from a figure standpoint, Carter was the last US president. Reagan was the one that was put on a pedistal and made into a demigod. He still is.

From an ideological/power standpoint, W. was the first president who had unprecidented power for both his and the vice-president's offices. Obama has not even taken office yet and you guys decry him as a diety/king. Take a good long look in the mirror before you make such ridiculous statements.

Obama may be a powerful president, but he will be able to govern without having to resort to raising the terror level, putting out messages about potential threats to the country, mentioning 9/11 every 2 min (which admittedly is less than Guiliani), and making the citizenry run for cover every time he opens his mouth.

give the guy a chance. you guys sound like the alumni at my alma-mater when Bob Knight was fired. the guy had the most difficult job in the NCAA, replacing Bob Knight and he never got credit for it. you want to retake the office in 2012, get rid of the noise, and focus on CORE GOP positions. You can't win by a technicality, which seems to be the current GOP tactic. That doesnt work anymore.

/end rant.
I think you mis-read my intentions in that post - it was merely meant as a joke in light of the Plato discussion Charlieo and I were having. Being in the 3rd form as the US is now, the cult like following that Obama had during the pre-election could have been compared to previous rulers like Hitler, and if continued on that path, the country would move towards the 4th form - hence my saying lets make Obama king.

Yeah well it would be on your mind a lot if you were the one who had to deal with the mess. It may not have been a big deal for you, but for some of us who lost friends and family and had to live with it for months it means something different. While the public went on about their lives 2 weeks later, New Yorkers were still excavating. 9/11 may be a day for you, but for us it was months of work, breathing in dust that you know full well contains ashes of the people who died, people you may have talked to last week. It may have been a news report and an excuse to you, but to New York, it was one of our darkest hours.

Reagan was smart enough to keep his hand out of the cookie jar and let businesses and people go about their business, creating jobs.
