Part 2 : Reading Diagnostic Codes
Ever wish you could pull diagnostic/trouble codes from your vehicle like the dealer/garage does? Want to clear that pesky check engine light because you left the gas cap off? Well there is a way do do this without buying expensive scan tools or incurring costs visiting your dealer.
Section A: Reading Engine Diagnostic Codes
Warning: This procedure is intended to give you the ability to read and clear diagnostic codes. More advanced troubleshooting should be handled by a Nissan dealer or mechanic. I assume no responsibility for damage caused by improper use of this procedure.
1) Firstly, read up on page EC-100 or EC-567 of the Service Manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Rogue/2008/EC.pdf
2) Follow the procedure exactly... it may take a few tries to get it right:
From the Manual:
The check engine light will now display a series of flashes. This is the 4 digit diagnotic (DTC) code. Here is how to decode them:HOW TO SET DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE II (SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
- Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
- Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the MIL (Check Engine Light) starts blinking.
NOTE: Do not release the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds if MIL may start blinking on the halfway of this 10 seconds. This blinking is displaying SRT status and is continued for another 10 seconds.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal. ECM has entered to Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic results).
Approx 2 second pause - Start of a new code
Approx 1 second pause - Space between digits of diagnostic code
0=10 flashes
1=1 flashes
2=2 flashes
...
9=9 flashes
A=11 flashes
B=12 flashes
C=13 flashes
D=14 flashes
E=15 flashes
F=16 flashes
There is a raft of codes, if you need help refer to the manual I linked to above. The most common one (and I actually had this the other day) is
0455 - EVAP control system gross leak detected. (gas cap not fully tightened)
DTC0000 is displayed as a series of 10 flashes... pause... 10 flashes... pause.HOW TO ERASE DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE II (SELF-DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS):
1. Set ECM in Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic results). Refer to “How to Set Diagnostic Test Mode II
(Self-diagnostic Results)”.
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds. The emission-related diagnostic information has been erased from the backup memory in the ECM.
3. Fully release the accelerator pedal, and confirm the DTC 0000 is displayed.
EXITING SELF DIAGNOSTIC MODE:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
