My ride is a 1993 240sx SE (American) with the CA18DET. I read online that disconnecting the dropping resistor in the automatic transmission will let it shift faster. I tried this, and it does shift faster, but I'm wondering if I'm going to blow the transmission soon. Anybody ever try this?

I answered this not long ago. Keep it unplugged if you want, but start buying spare transmissions, you're going to need them.

also i have 162000 and i dont think its ever been flushed or changed, i ahave a weekend job ahead i think, if im not tearin out tha CA from the wreck its in

I'd try to reply to that, but I can understand a word you wrote. Ever heard of punctuation?

I understood most of it, and thanks for all of your responses, but there's another thing I don't get: If the dropping resistor should not be disconnected, then why was it placed in an easily reachable spot, and why would it be so easy to disconnect? Shouldn't it just be part of the A/T computer's circuits?

A better solution that I found, so I don't blow up the transmission, would be to put in a switch on the dash so that I can turn this on and off while driving. I'll tell you how it turns out.

Hate to bring up an old thread but i just recently got a 89 240sx and i had this same question. I feel a big difference by disconnecting the resistor but im curious if anyone else besides slw240sx has done this. How long do you think the transmission will last? I plan on doing the whole sr20det and auto to manual conversion in about a year so as long as it last a year i would be happy. I just would hate to have go back to that sluggish feeling i got before disconnecting it but if this is gonna kill the transmission in a month i can't afford a new one soon.

just because it dumps into gear harder doesn't mean it's shifting any faster.

so onto the reliability, it'll probably depend on how many miles and overall maintainence on it. if it's been pretty decently taken care of, I'd assume it'd last long enough, but for just a "faster feel" ala it's rougher, i'd just leave the resistor there imo.

Thanks. Honestly though it doesn't just feel "rougher" i definately noticed how much quicker it was picking up speed. With the resistor connected i have to wait until i get it up to around 40 for it to start going fast and smooth. But i guess your right, this is a $1400 junker that i should have skipped but i got too excited when i drove it that i bought it without really thinking it through. I doubt the previous owner took good care of it at all. I'll probably be the guinea pig for everyone else thinking about it. Maybe change the transmission fluid every 3 thousand miles will keep it going. lol Again thanks to anyone who replies.
