I'm trying to install a new single din stereo in my 01 QX4. I disconnected the 4WD wire to remove the plastic cover around the stereo. After I reconnected it, car won't switch to AUTO (lights in dash show it is still in rear wheel drive when I switch it to AUTO). 4HI and 4LO work though. I did not disconnect the battery when I unplugged the wires. Any ideas? I'll try to disconnect/reconnect the battery.

Disconnected and reconnected the battery. Nothing. SOB just won't switch to AUTO. And it is raining in Seattle here all the time. All I did was disconnect and reconnect the wire from the 4WD switch. So f****ing annoying

Do you have any ABS light on ?

if not check fuse 8, 18 and 24,.. If ok, then run the self diagnostic procedure for the atx14a at page TF60 of the tf.pdf .. On the next page you will the codes that your transfer case is complaining about... that might help..

No lights are on and there was nothing wrong with the car/4WD system before I disconnected the wire. All I did was remove the plastic cover around the stereo/NAV to remove the stereo and I disconnected all the wires connected to it to do so (including the 4WD wire from the 4WD switch). After I connected everything back 4WD system does not switch to AUTO.

Ok guys, got a new switch and it works now. Apparently the "AUTO" feature in the switch burned out when I disconnected it without disconnecting the battery. So just be aware of that.

Thanks for circling back RR425, and good reminder. I have been one of those renegades that likes to get away with as much as I can when it comes to disconnecting the negative terminal.
