Alright, right now I have 2 PS2's. One of them (mine) I bought a year after it came out (GT3 racing pack), after about a year and a half of gaming, I got the dreadful disc read error message, I called up SCEA and everything and was ready tp ship it, but I decided I'd try it one more time before I do. So, I did and it worked ( keep in mind it had been sitting around collecting dust for about 4 months), I was releieved b/c I didnt have to ship it out, and I still play to this day.

Heres the story though, my girlfriend has 2 PS2's, she had bought a second one because the other one kept getting the disc read error message, I asked about the other one, and her little brother told me it was in the garage, I offered to buy it, and the litle brother said 20$, I i had was 8$, so I end up buying it for $5.00, I;m thinking its a steal cause it been sitting around it might not have that message anymore. The dumb kid had forgot that there was still a game in there (Jak and Daxter) and he just told me to keep it. I turned it on, and to my surprise, it started playing jak and daxter, im like holy sh1t thats cool, I just got another ps2 for 5$. Well, I put in a few other discs that work on my ps2 and put it in this one, and I get the disc read error message. I really dont want to send it in b/c I want a game cube so I'll have all three systems.

Finally, heres my question, w/o me sending it in, is there any way I can fix this my self w/o fuxoring anything too bad? My plan is to trade it in tomorrow, or whenever I can. Or should I just take it to a place (gamestop, gamecrazy) and see if they'll take it? suggestions please:help

PS2s die after a while, I know a guy who's on his 6th. I'm still on my 1st, and I used to play a LOT... I almost never get a disc error, cept when I had one of the bad copies of GTA3... but they gave me a new one free :D. Anyway, I don't think there's much you can do, have them test it w/ Jak and Daxter ;), lol...

They say mos of them were because people were watching dvd's on them. I dont know if thats true.

Anyway, the only real fix, buy an XBOX.

BB, the easiest way to fix the disc read error(of course, you'll void the warranty doing this), is to take the unit apart, and to clean the lens with a fine cloth, such as a sunglass/eyeglass cleaning cloth. Then you have to move the laser guide a bit, I wouldn't move it the first time though, as I did this on my friends PS2 without moving it, just cleaning the laser, and it ended up working perfectly. The PS2 is really easy to navigate in once you get it popped open.

I'm only on my 2nd ps2 since it came out (I got the first one the day the ps2 was released, I found it on a shelf in target by accident so I bought it)

The problem is a dirty lens, like JoshIsSciFi said

That's funny. The whole "disc read" error was the reason I sold my XBOX and bought a PS2. I just couldn't stand it. Although I'm guessing it was because I got one of the first XBOX's (bought on the day they were released) and it probably had a few bugs in it. But my PS2 has been holding up strong, even after many hours of GT3...

I've had my PS2 for 3 years and I never get disc read errors. I've used it for DVDs and video games (GT3 for days on end, etc)...

Well if it is because of DVDs and not games, then that explains why mine has lasted so long (ordered it in July before it came out, along with GT3, which didn't come for a year.... anyway, I got my PS2 in November! I ordered it in July! WTF?)...

I need a new game, none of the others have the same appeal they did before I had spent at least several days on each of them... maybe I ought to start from scratch on GT3 for kicks... though I can't overwrite my old save... two 400Rs is not a normal thing to have :D! My brother traded some silly car for a second, black, one to add to my yellow... mmmm.... one is modded, one is all stock for collector's purposes, how ****ed up am I?

I was out all day (mall, gettin girls numbers etc.) and I made a stop at Gamestop. kept my fingers crossed, and I got 80$ store credit for the PS2 :D $75 profit, along with the trade in value of my other games, I got 159.62 store credit, so I bought a gamecube, controller, memory card, and I have $40 left store credit. Overall it was a good day and I was happy I got so much profit out of a $5 ps2.

A quick fix to the disc read error on the PS2's that worked for my roommate's console is to switch it to sitting vertically and playing games that way. We haven't had a problem since (8 months and going)

XBOX had plenty of DDE's(dirty disc errors). Pretty sure microsoft took it in the butt for using subpar disc drives. (I got lucky and got one of the newer boxes...no dde's for me)

Some games you should consider for the Gameecube: Metroid Prime, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (though, I don't dig the childish graphics), and F-Zero GX are all pretty awesome games. But I always love hitting up Super Smash Bros Melee with my friends every now and then...

Yeah its out already, the four swords. The one I really can't wait for comes out next year, 3-D and everything. They say its a direct link (no pun intended) to the Ocarina of Time. The screenshots look nice and Link is all grown up (finally)

Is the 3D Zelda game gonna be cel-shaded though? That's what I didn't really like about the first Zelda GC game. But I haven't gotten around to playin the four swords game. Sounds awesome!
