So I am headed to School this morning. I am headed down a hill getting ready to turn left and get on to the Interstate (all of you in the raleigh area, i was at Lead Mine and Glenwood Ave) When all of a sudden a dude does a kamikaze dive from the straight lane into the left turn lane (which i am in) , and a lady in silver hyundai sonata in front of me slams on the brakes to avoid hitting the jerk-off and I slam on the brakes to avoid hitting her, but alas, to no avail. The damage is faily extensive....pretty sure it will be deemed totaled. The front right corner turn signal and headlight are gone, the front bumper is smashed along the passenger side, the radiator is destroyed as well as the fan and probably the water-pump depending on the how far back the radiatior went into the engine, i think the fron radiatior cross member is also fairly well damaged, the battery is destroyed and right front fender has been jammed into the passenger side door. Unfortunately, I only had liability on it because that is what i could afford, so i think i am SOL......will post pics later.

Oh, and the guy who started the whole thing.....Watched it happen in his rearview mirror and took off like a bat outta hell......wish i could find the dude....give him a piece of my mind (and an upclose view of a stainless steel class ring) for smashing my beloved S13 coupe.....and only 85500 miles....

This cant be your fault... I think it was clearly his fault if you werent speeding or anything.... Most insurance, even liability, has a hit and run policy.. dont get discouraged yet... plus, if you find him, lawsuit city.

depends on what state you are. on some states, both drivers are liable.

Here (Montreal) You're always at fault...unless there's like a video of someone stopping on the highway on purpose...you'll never convince them you're not at fault...

Crashed my beater 1 month ago because of a taxi that stopped on the highway to watch an accident on the side of the road...now I'm screwed for insurance rates.

Nope, you are responsible as a driver to give ample stopping distance between you and the car in front of you.

Sometimes this works out against what really happened but thats just the way the dominoes fall.

Quite a few states have changed this now because of the scam where someone pulls in front of you and slams the brakes to collect your insurance. But in that situation the rear driver would probably still be technically at fault if the story was told that way. You are "supposed" to have enough room to stop, like Nismo_Freak said. But does anyone ever really do this? People would be like 200 feet apart on the interstate.

But sorry about the car. I had something like that happen and it sucked, cept I hit a bumper hitch on a large van.

How much structural damage is done? From the pictures it looked as though the fenders, hood, and bumper were shot... you mentioned about the radiator being pushed back... couldn't you replace the fenders, hood, bumper, and possibly get a shop to weld a new front crossmember on it... sure it wouldn't be too cheap... But I would think that for around 1500 to 2000 you could get it fixed given that you are willing to do some of the work yourself... and get some parts from a junkyard that are in good shape... I think that it would be better than attempting to get something else (inless of course you find a nice deal!)

Well, good luck and I hope that all works out for you!

(I too am in Raleigh... some of the roads just seem to be crazy even w/o too much traffic! I attend NC State and miss my 240... it's sitting at home until next year... Then I'll have to try to set up a meet or two on a weekend somewhere around here!)
