removing housings is very simple and won't hurt anything as long as you get it back on all even and tight.

^^^ Correct.

Remove the bolts on the rear of the compressor, and then carefully pull the cover straight off.

Measure wheel, report back with specs.

I've totally rebuilt 4 turbo's now. Seals bearings and all. I also never had them balanced. You'll lose some life of the turbo, but bearing kits are cheap enough to just rebuild it again if it wears out. Here's where I get my kits. http://www.saabperformanceparts.com/item107.htm Just make sure your shaft is actually a Garret or the same diameter or the rear seal won't fit. The turbo's that Cheap Turbo sell aren't Garret internals, so I had to mod the rear seal by shaving .012 in thickness.

Does this compressor housing need to be aligned in any certain way or is that done according to the vehicle?

You will clock the compressor once it is installed.

Most likely he is a Diesel Turbo Mechanic. Big gnarly turbos and stuff. The stuff we use isnt much compared to some nice freightliner sequential setups.

Unless - anybody heard of a 48 trim?

This guy was kind of a pecker head and I'd hate to have to take it back to him. I'm telling you the guy was pointing at the A/R value on the compressor and calling it the trim.

Guess luck was on my side - just hope he balanced it.
The trim is not a direct measurement. It's actually a ratio between the minor area and major area. But to make things simple, the minor diameter should be 2.122 inches and the major should be 3 inches.

Thank you. I know how to measure the trim. And yes, this place does deal primarily with diesel motors. I saw a turbo there that was about the size of a 24" wheel.

But my point is that trim does not dictate what compressor you have, For all you know, they can stick in a 48 trim or 50 trim T04B(theoretically) and trim would calculate correctly. To know if it's a 50 trim or perhaps a 48 trim T04E, you need the actual dimensions...which you still have not posted up. Since you have not, I posted the specs of a T04E 50 trim so you can compare. Feel free to use the info however you want...

For me, I'd send it to Phoenix Turbo, but you ccould send it to anyone who professionaly rebuild turbos. Any company who assembles turbo's or remanufactures turbo's will have a balancing machine.

This is the main reason I do not buy cheap turbo's or remanufactured turbo's. If it's cheap, then it was 99% of the time never balanced. Atleast if I put it together I know I inspected all off the internals. So if it fails it's a learning experience, not just relying on someone else.

yea i'm looking at buying ticketman's t3 that has shaft play. I was going to see about learning how to rebuilt it so I can do it myself and then just send it to get it balanced! DO you have to have any special tools?

You need a pair of snap-ring pliars and various sockets. The shaft end(inside the exhaust housing) will be a pita. Since they remove material from it during the balance. You just have to try several sockets till one manages to grab. I had touse a friggin vice one time.

Oh, the T3/TO4 is reverse threaded by the way. I found that out the hard way when I used my impact gun to remove the nut...lol.
