In NY you need to allow 70% of the visible light through...tho' the back window can be of any darkness...a 5% upperstrip on the windshield is allowed as well...you also need to have two side mirros if you tint the back window...I'm still kicking it around...

I recently had my windows tinted and was actually quite pleased. I never even thought the windshield would be included - I'm pretty sure that's illegal, unless you're just talking about a visor stripe at the top.

The darkest I think you can go in the front in MO is 35%. The back and rear can go as dark as you want. I think I went somewhere around 45 in the back and it's great. It's a good balance of night-time visibility and glare/heat reducing... and I can still see through it if I have sunglasses on.

The tint shop I went to did also mention that, at times, police can be sticklers about tint. In fact, since the front windows come with a very, very light tint in the glass, he suggested backing off the tint so the total tint in the front came to around 35%. He said if he went ahead and put straight-up 35% on my windows I could legitimately be pulled over.

NC has a stipulation that allows for that (law says 35%, but up 32% is allowed due to factory tinting already in place). Not sure if MO would have that in their laws though, you could check.

In the FAQs area, where we have the tint laws by state, it says that MO is 35% all around NET (which means including factory tinting). NC also says 35% net as well.

The other type of listing is called "film", which WA is a state under that category. It is listed as 35%/FILM, which means that you can have 35% film tint on your window, and the factory tinting does not count toward that limit.

Biggie - If you know where to point us in the NC state law that says that the factory tint doesn't count towards the maximum, we can change that entry to read 35%/FILM.

Motor Vehicle Act: Equipment (NCGS Ch. 20, Article 3)

(b) Window Tinting Restrictions. – A window of a vehicle that is operated on a highway or a public vehicular area shall comply with this subsection. The windshield of the vehicle may be tinted only along the top of the windshield and the tinting may not extend more than five inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS1 line of the windshield, whichever measurement is longer. Provided, however, an untinted clear film which does not obstruct vision but which reduces or eliminates ultraviolet radiation from entering a vehicle may be applied to the windshield. Any other window of the vehicle may be tinted in accordance with the following restrictions:

(1) The total light transmission of the tinted window shall be at least thirty‑five percent (35%). A vehicle window that, by use of a light meter approved by the Commissioner, measures a total light transmission of more than thirty‑two percent (32%) is conclusively presumed to meet this restriction....
