Hey guys,

I need some help and fast if possible. A friend of mine is looking to purchase a '96 240 and he knows the guy he's buying from. They're not friends but they went to school together.

So here's the problem. My friend knows how much the guy from school drives the 240 and can't believe the mileage on the car. I guess the guy used to brag about how he always goes on road trips and usually drives about 3500 miles a month. So from the last time my friend looked at the car the area around the shifter was intact and the mileage was around 153,000. Fast forward about two months later the area around the shifter is broken and there's only 154,280 as we speak. It's an automatic also.

So without going under the car or doing anything major, can someone disable the odometer in the car? IF so what can we check to make sure he didn't disable it?

Thanks for the help,

Zac

If you and your friend are already doubts about the seller AND his car, you just need to walk away from it. There will always be other cars to buy..

I guess... my friend wanted a project and he really liked this one but I'll just tell him to forget about it.

yes someone can disable the odometer. either take the speed sensor out, roll back the odometer or have a spare cluster. maybe theres some more too

Yea I think there's something suspicion about the car. My buddy decided that he's going to look for another one.

Have you ever actually tried to rollback an odometer? The more likely scenario is the other two you mentioned

I've never done it, but looking through the factory manual i have, I was thinking there were about three connectors that could have been disconnected but we never checked any of them because we never had the car alone.

But doesn't matter too much anymore though. Interesting topic though.

No im saying i bet you have never tried it. I took one apart once and tried it and it has a setup so the wheels can only go one way. If you roll them back you break it.

I KNOW its possible to disable it. just disconnect your transmission harness. Car will work fine just no gauges. Im saying rolling back the odometer. I doubt anyone has ever successfully tried it.
