Hello guys,

I am new to the forum and it's amazing to see there are avid infiniti M lovers out there. I just recently purchased an M35, with 55k miles and it was just one owner, and a female. This car is pristine and immaculate, and it has been well kept except for one quirk...I can't stop staring at how sexy this car is. I also got it for a great deal, well below it's going value! The one thing that irks me... such that I had to decide settling with it vs letting go of this amazing deal I was getting with this car is that the plastic glass in front of the tachometer is dirty on the inside surface and looks not very pleasant, especially at night when it should be all pretty dash lights. I am not sure what the previous owner did that made it that way but it's pretty unusual....It kinda looks like a fungus, mold, or dried soda spill that seeped inside, not really sure. I decided to go ahead and still purchase with the feeling that I would be committed to find a way to get it cleaned.

I was just wondering if anybody has seen that before, and has any idea whether it can be remedied somehow. Can it be cleaned somehow? Or do I have to take it to the dealer? Will the whole tach assembly have to be replaced with new ones if I want the clean look? (im thinking that would be costly quite a bit).

Any ideas would be really great. Below is a pic of how it looks..... Thanks y'all

1st, get a hold of the service manual
2nd, pull that sumbich off yourself and clean it up good, good time to make a DIY and take some photos of the process
3rd, save yourself a bundle vs going to the stealership
4th, use money that would've been spent on that repair on an UpRev!!!

gl with the cleaning!

Hi again, here is a quick update on this issue I had, for those who care enough or for future info. After being inspired by pedsemdoc's reply (kudos), I went ahead and got a hold of the service manual. I followed the instructions to open up the cluster, and actually later realized there were a lot of unnecessary steps listed by the service manual....it is actually VERY VERY easy to get to.

I didn't have a fancy camera to take pics, but I can describe the process.

On both sides of the steering wheel, there are two small trim pieces that pop off easily with a flat head screwdriver or a plastic remover (I used a remover - avoiding scratches). Once those are out, the cluster will pop out with a slight nudge. It snaps into place in the surrounding dash. Then the cluster can be pulled out over the steering wheel, leaving the actual tach/speedo in the dash with the plastic lens over it. The lens also snaps into place over it.....so just pop it out. (Baffled me myself how easily constructed this car is....anyway ...moving on)

So i thought the old lens was dirty on the inside, so when i tried cleaning it, I realized the entire plastic itself was kinda oxidized or something. Something seeped right into the plastic, so no amount of cleaning was gonna fix it.
Frustrated, I refused to believe it was gonna be like that forever. So I did a quick search online and found that infinipartsusa had it listed as one of their parts. So I called and inquired, and they confirmed. So I ordered a brand new one.....about 40 bucks. Got it in about 3 days and did the above process again to replace. Pretty easy. Now my dash is looking clean and lens crisp as new. I'm very very satisfied.

Hit me up for any questions if anybody interested.

T.
