Alright, this is what the engine looks like now, and I am wondering if i should just go buy some sponges and start scrubbing or should I spend some money to get it steam cleaned or something similar.

Get it steam cleaned. It'll look amazing afterwards....better than brand, new.

I've seen cars with 80+ thousand miles on them that recently had their engine steam cleaned by a good detail shop and you would NEVER guess in a million years the mileage they have on the car.

or, you can go and buy some engine cleaner form auto part store.. just make sure you cover up the battery and plus and stuff and then spray the whole comparment down with the stuff,... then all you have to do is run water over it and you have a really clean engine bay.. that's what I did. works good... you may need to just wipe off some stuff but it saves a lot of $$$

oh yeah i have some of that engine bright stuff that you spray on the engine and spray it off with water , is there anything else you need to cover up besides the battery, like if you have an after market intake or wires or anything?

Two Words: GREASED LIGHTNING ...just like Black240 said, a good engine cleaner does wonders...just as good as a steam job and saves $$$$ that could be spent on modding ure car.

yea.. you cover up battery... intake... coil and any electrical stuff that can not be doused in water... just wrap them in plastic and you're done... go to town.. very easy!

I used engine cleaner toclean my engine too. I used tooth brush to scrub the thing that doesn't come off easily. It works really good.

Other advantages of keeping a clean engine? When you work on your car, your hands/clothes won't get as filthy. There's less overall debris in the engine that could get somewhere it doesn't need to be, etc.

in addition to what stickgoat said. keeping it clean helps you find new problems easier for instance- if you have an oil leak, its hard to tell where its coming from if there is oil and dirt and grease everywhere. if its clean, then you can find it very easily

How do you find a place that will steam clean your engine-bay and undercarraige? I have called several detailing places here in atlanta, but no-one has heard of steam cleaning the engine compartment. All they will do is chemical engine-bay cleaning.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place...

Well, techically your car would be lighter with the weight reduction from the dirt. :D
