Hey all,This weekend at a drift event my dipstick blew out about an inch and oil sprayed everywhere. Obviously high oil pressure caused this, but what would cause my pressure to go that high? It happened to me twice in a row and then I quit driving and coincidentally it happened to the only other guy there running a CA...Crazy! I was able to drive it 100 miles back home with no problems whatsoever...Let me know.

It's not high oil pressure, but a process called "blow-by" which is a process whereas your pistons and/or rings are worn to the point where they allow pressure from the combustion chamber to get past them and into your sump area creating pressure in your oil pan at which time that pressure will find the weakest point and find it's way out. You will usually find oil spraying out of your exhaust cam cover's breather hole, but if you blew out your dipstick a bit, rest assure you got it bad!

hm, terrific...the guy I bought the car from had the exhaust side breather hole cut and welded shut cuz he thought it was just for emissions crap...you think that alone would cause this, or are my rings probably bad either way?

p.s. anyone have an exhaust side valve cover for sale?

I thought blowby was when you beat someone in a race So your exhuast side valve cover breather is plugged up? That is not necessary, uncork it if you can. If you are spitting out dipsticks though I would suggest taking your drift event entry money and saving up for some rings and machine shop fees, you will be needing it soon.

I got one for sale! Give a zip and I'll give you a shipped price. Looks like you'll be needing an engine refreshening very soon. Hey "mad" blowing by someone is not called "blow-by"; it's called smokage

lol, he had the breather welded, your buddy didn't get a hint on why this happens.

As the above members mentioned, your rings are finished. It will be cheaper to go with Dees ways and buy another engine.

could also be the PCV system failing while on boost.. i.e. if the breather from the valvecover to the air intake is not hooked up, and you have some not fatal blowby, could still cause that to happen..

you'll always have SOME blowby, normally it should be consumed via the PCV system.

a VERY good explanation of how PCV systems work (from a friend's thread on upgraded PCV's on another car forum, forum registration required unfortunately): here

It's important to have the PCV system hooked up properly, ESPECIALLY on a boosted car. A N/A car will hardly ever create enough crankcase pressure to blow the dipstick out. But my freshly rebuilt CA w/an improperly hooked up PCV system will still kick my dipstick out occasionally. Just to double check that I hadn't botched my rebuild, I jury rigged up a small vac pump to maintain a negative pressure in the crankcase and then went out for some full boost runs on the highway. It instantly alleviated my dipstick problem. If I ever get an intake on my turbo so that the system is hooked up properly, I'm sure it will stay in.

my stock KA blew out the dipstick once.

I'm pretty sure the CA never has.

yeah, I talked to the other guy that this happened to and he said his shop said it is most likely the pcv valve. Both of our motors have been compression tested and were good across the board and I've only had mine running for 2 weeks...I'll look into it and let you all know

blocked breathers (the one from the block undcer the plenum especially) would do this

150 for light honing of the block?! man, go borrow the tool from auto zone and do it yourself for free. if i can do it without screwing something up, anyone can.

sorry, i just saw those estimated prices and was a little shocked. i replaced every gasket on the engine and it didnt cost that much! (and the bearings are only a few bucks each at advance by the way, for clevite 77s) just for future reference! please dont kill me!
