I'm in the final stages of getting this VH45 put together, and running into a few minor "how do these go together" issues. Since I've never actually seen one put together, it's like putting legos together without directions.

I apologize for the horrible picture. I had to take it with my phone, but hopefully someone can recognize whether these are the correct tubes for the dip-stick. One of them looks bent (on the right), and the actual dip-stick doesn't want to slide into either. Both came in a bin of parts I got with the engine.

Second question, where does the alternator tensioner mount? Does it bolt onto the timing covers like the water pump/PS tensioner? I looked through all my parts and don't think I got one. A picture would be so helpful.

I will have to try posting in VH45 specific forum.

The one on the left with the yellow handle is the transmission fluid dipstick I believe.

I've never seen one uninstalled. Is there something in the FSM about it? I just got my '92 FSM in the mail this morning and I can't wait to get off work and read it. I wonder how different it is from the '94 IO've come to know and love.

That would make sense if the dipstick is actually for the transmission! Damnit...now I have to track one of those down too. Thanks for the response.

Now to find out about that alternator tensioner...

Are you planning to build a Q from scratch? Wow. That's dedication.

Please post pics of the progress. I've never seen a Q completely dismantled.

the one on the left is actually the oil dip-stick,the 45* bend in it should point toward the front of your engine and a 10 mm screw goes in the clamp on the dipstick and screws inti alt. bracket. good luck. im building my 93 Q45 from the ground up pretty much, back to factory, no hot rod type stuff, i think the Q is a true definition of a full size luxury sport and thats the way it should stay. Putting loud ex-haust,headers,etc., just really ruins the awesome Q, but thats just my opinion, i wouldnt mind making it faster by upgrading the ECU and other things, just want it to sound and run smooth like a luxury was meant to! dont get me wrong i liked my hot rods at one time i rebuilt a 1968 Firebird with a 400 RAM-AIR II package and a TURBO 400 AUTO-MATIC,AND 411 REAR-END, those were the good old days when gas was about $2 a gallon cheaper!! ill try and post some pics of my progress on my Q45. Wow....I didn't even know this forum existed until 5 minutes ago.

Thanks for the responses!

And to answer questions...It isn't going in a Q. I bought an engine in 1000 pieces and I'm in the process of trying to get it put together. It's 98% done...just finishing up the little stuff.

I guess I didn't realize the dip-stick actually goes a couple inches past the end of the dip-stick tube. Makes sense since it needs to sit in the pan. Just wanted to make sure I've got proper oil level here in a week or two when I can get this thing fired up.
